Juan Francisco Casas. Product Test Dji Phantom. Paper-Art Posters Gorgeously Illustrate Key Design Principles. Okay, so they're no replacement for a RISD degree.
But these posters, by Turkish graphic designer Efil Turk, offer a fun primer on foundational visual concepts. For her senior thesis at the Dokuz Eylul University of Fine Arts, Efil illustrated 10 principles--balance, hierarchy, pattern, rhythm, space, proportion, emphasis, movement, contrast, and unity--in the refreshingly old-school medium of 3-D cut-paper collage. "I wanted to question what are the fundamental elements of design besides creativity," Turk tells Co.Design. Each principle is cleverly illustrated: “Emphasis” features an orange and red triangle popping out against a background of gray and black; “Space” is illustrated with an open swath of white, fringed with colorful zigzags; "Hierarchy" is represented by a pyramid. Drypoint is a printmaking technique in the intaglio family where images are etched onto a plate using a sharp metal or diamond point. Give anything some extra eyes and I’m usually a fan, but there’s also something about using a more traditional and laborious printmaking technique to make such intriguing imagery that I really respect.

And since it’s been on everyone’s minds the past several months, a winter-induced chill factor has been influencing the design world. First it was fashion. At this year’s Milano Salone, Junpei Tamaki is presenting “Snow,” a collection of furniture inspired by cold weather, ice and – finally – the great thaw. Good Design For Living in Small ApartmentsAs people migrate to smaller spaces, good design helps a lot. This is something they figured out in Europe long ago, that if you don't have a lot of horizontal room you can go vertical. Tumidei in Italy makes some of the nicest stuff, like this unit with lots of storage under the bed. This unit just raises the floor high enough for beds to slide under. Loft 24-7 - Sao Paulo, Brazil. Ideally, wouldn't we all like to live in a climate where outdoor living is possible year-round? And wouldn't we love to live in a space where the divide between indoors and outdoors is non-existent? São Paulo-based Fernanda Marques achieved this idealistic balance in her Loft 24-7 residence, presented at the CasaCor exhibition in São Paulo, Brazil. In the 250-square-meter (about 2,700 square feet) space, Marques has erased the barriers by using "outdoor" elements inside and "indoor" elements outside and creating easy visual links between the two.

Spectacular stair dominates house, serves many functions. There is an appalling trend in house design lately where home elevators are, if not standard, certainly are becoming common. The Globe and Mail writes about a 41 year old homebuilder in Calgary who installed one from his basement garage to the main level because "Hauling groceries up a flight of stairs with two young sons in tow wasn’t going to work.
" Much of the justification for putting in elevators is that " demand is partly driven by baby boomers who want to “age in place.” In fact, the opposite is true; there are elderly New Yorkers living in walkup apartments that swear that the stairs are what keeps them fit and mobile.
