Intermediate MaxMSP

A list is an ordered series of messages, lists can contain numbers and words. The "pack" object lets you create lists of all different sizes. Create a pack object. By default pack creates lists containing two messages, so it has two inlets. The leftmost inlet of the pack object is hot and the remaining inlet is cold. You can make longer lists by adding arguments to the pack object. Unpack is the opposite of pack. Intro to MaxMSP. MaxMSP is a visual programming language that helps you build complex, interactive programs without any prior experience writing code.

MaxMSP is especially useful for building audio, MIDI, video, and graphics applications where user interaction is needed. This Instructable is part of a 3-part workshop I'm running at Women's Audio Mission, it's part one of three Instructables that I'll be publishing over the course of the next week. CataRT is based on FTM&Co. by Norbert Schnell and collaborators. See also: Description The concatenative real-time sound synthesis system CataRT plays grains from a large corpus of segmented and descriptor-analysed sounds according to proximity to a target position in the descriptor space. CataRT is implemented in MaxMSP and takes full advantage of the generalised data structures and arbitrary-rate sound processing facilities of the FTM and Gabor libraries. CataRT allows to explore the corpus interactively or via a target sequencer, to resynthesise an audio file or live input with the source sounds, or to experiment with expressive speech synthesis and gestural control. CataRT is explained in more detail in this article and is an interactive implementation of the new concept of Corpus-Based Concatenative Synthesis.

Version 0.36 is available for download. It provides basic support for sending and receiving messages between Processing and Max, a Max object for launching Processing sketches, and some tools for creative networking. MaxLink works by multicasting UDP messages over the local subnet. It uses a specific namespace protocol to match the inlets and outlets of Max objects with declared inputs and outputs of a Java processes (including Processing sketches). Various existing systems of just intonation can be selected and then played either with the computer keyboard, a MIDI keyboard, or from an external application. The intervals can be played as zither sounds, organ sounds, piano sounds, or sine tones. You can also specify your own intervals and save the resulting intonation system as a preset.
