Intern Nation by Ross Perlin – review | Books | The Observer All right for some: Chelsea Clinton joins a meeting with Denis Aitken of the WHO during her internship with the organisation, Geneva, 2002. Photograph: Reuters/ Corbis In February, a Conservative party fundraiser auctioned off internships at City firms and glossy magazines. With thousands of young people struggling to find work, wealthy Tory backers paid thousands to secure plum opportunities for their children. While Nick Clegg sermonises about social mobility, David Cameron has admitted to being "very relaxed" about giving an internship in his constituency office to his neighbour's son. The culture of unpaid work is troubling and complex but rarely subject to thorough scrutiny. Perlin traces the history of the internship, which originally referred to a time of training in the medical profession. But the proliferation of internships has blurred any sense of meaning. This is not to say that all internships are worthless. Anna Winter has been an intern at various newspapers and magazines.

What we look for | Careers We’re looking for people who have an unusual blend of passion, dedication, and energy. They are creative and insightful problem solvers, they enjoy working in teams, they have an entrepreneurial spirit, and they are interesting people beyond the office. These are the common denominators across approximately 10,000 consultants in more than 100 offices. We love people who like people, because they will be committed to helping their clients and colleagues succeed. We are a culture of inclusiveness, where people from diverse backgrounds—using the broadest interpretation of that word—are not just welcome, but actively sought. We thrive when our teams are a healthy mix of those with different backgrounds, cultures, genders, education, training, interests, skills, and tastes in music. We hire people for who they are and who they will be. Meet our people and from their own personal stories learn why they chose McKinsey, who they are, and the high-impact work they do. Five areas of focus

Get an MBA, Save the World - By Charles Kenny Perhaps it's the combined Twitter power of the Two Bills (Gates and Easterly), but working in development is hot, and not just for their 5.9 million followers. I'm not kidding: The website GradSchools.com lists 204 master's programs in international development, meant to prepare students for the glamorous life of managing technical assistance to water and sanitation departments in Bangladesh or dealing with the logistics of emergency food programs in Somalia. Devex, the international development portal, boasts a database of 410,000 candidates for employers working in the aid arena to search. And the World Bank's Young Professionals Program, a route to a permanent position at the organization, routinely attracts about 10,000 applicants for about 30 spots each year. But there is more than one way to make the planet a better place. How about improving personal hygiene and preventing deaths from diseases like diarrhea? But that's far from the whole story.
