The Girl Who Loves to Levitate (14 photos) Natsumi Hayashi is a sweet-looking Japanese girl who, one day, decided to take self-portraits..of herself levitating. She can be spotted in and around Tokyo, equipped with her SLR and her self-timer. When she feels the moment strike, she presses the shutter button down and then, quite literally, "jumps" into place. What I love most about her shots is that they don't feel forced. Natsumi has a way of making us feel as though she naturally levitates throughout life. Richard Clarkson and company wanted to create a kind of low-tech, sensory-deprivation, sofa-style seat where one can curl up and forget the workaday worries of ordinary life … and perhaps even doze over before you notice you are slowly falling asleep. While there is art and craft in this object, there is science that went into its design as well.

Think crocheted bicycles, yarn bombing and random acts of planting. To be sure, traditional urban art is dominated by men. But the last decade has seen the rise of a number of talented female urban artists whose diverse subject matter ranges from candy-colored caricatures to abstract shapes and constellations -- and whose tools range from spray paint to more unconventional means of expression. From Poland comes urban artist NeSpoon, whose artistic focus is on the intricate patterns of lace, and breaking its granny stereotype by using it to beautify gritty urban spaces.

The Tire Art of Wim Delvoye For his series titled "Pneu", Belgian artist Wim Delvoye created a series of decorative objects by hand-carving intricate patterns and floral motifs on used car tires. Through his manipulation of found objects, Delvoye transforms things that seem useful in everyday life into sculptural pieces that carry a different value from their original intended purpose.
