Glasnost: Test if your ISP is shaping your traffic The goal of the Glasnost project is to make ISPs' traffic shaping policies transparent to their customers. To this end, we designed Glasnost tests that enable you to check whether traffic from your applications is being rate-limited (i.e., throttled) or blocked. Glasnost tests work by measuring and comparing the performance of different application flows between your host and our measurement servers.

Soda Bottle Rocket Launcher - All Some of you that have followed me for a while might recognize this project as an upgraded version of my water bottle rocket launcher, seen in this video. While the old design was the cause of quite a few singed arm hairs, this new model is much more pleasant to use due to the new blast shield as well as the distance from the rockets that has been achieved by having the igniter on a longer leash. Even so, safety glasses are a required precaution, just in case. I recently participated in leading some science based activities for grade school aged kids and these bottle launchers were a big hit. The kids had a lot of fun attaching craft foam fins onto the bottles with duct tape and hot glue. The launchers themselves only take about 20 minutes to put together, so it's a quick and easy project that offers a ton of entertainment.

Walled world: How walls are springing up to divide populations everywhere Justin McCurry The demilitarised zone, or DMZ, stretches for 155 miles from east to west and is lined on its northern and southern perimeters with fences topped with barbed wire to prevent invasions and defections. It first went up in 1953 after the armistice agreement detailed the exact distance both sides were required to withdraw from the frontline. The fence is regularly patrolled by troops who wear special markings to indicate to the enemy that their intentions aren’t hostile. Soldiers from both sides may patrol inside the DMZ, but they are prohibited from crossing the military demarcation line that splits the zone into two strips just over a mile wide.

Creating EPUB files with wallabag You might remember a post I wrote a few months ago about wallabag, an open source alternative to read-it-later apps like Instapaper and pocket. If you don’t remember, feel free to go back to that post and read it. Don’t worry. I’ll wait for you. Done? Great! 99 Resources to Research & Mine the Invisible Web College researchers often need more than Google and Wikipedia to get the job done. To find what you're looking for, it may be necessary to tap into the invisible web, the sites that don't get indexed by broad search engines. The following resources were designed to help you do just that, offering specialized search engines, directories, and more places to find the complex and obscure. Search Engines Whether you're looking for specific science research or business data, these search engines will point you in the right direction.

Mechanical Hand - All My most successful project to date. And I have learned that it is fun to have another hand! Not to mention that its great in costumes and gives a great deal more mileage than any other costume props I have made. In total I believe this project took less than 20 hours (once parts were assembled) and cost under $40 (the springs were expensive!). I have now begun a more advanced version of the hand which will be larger, have more accurately scaled dimensions, better aesthetics, and, best of all, digit movement from side to side as well as both front and back. It may be quite some time before completion though.

Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. The Most South-Western Point of The African Continent The discovery of Cape of Good Hope — a geographic location with one of the most romantic names in the world — is due to Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias. At the end of the 15th century Portugal was literally obsessed with discovering the seaway to India sending one expedition after another. In 1487 this task was entrusted to Dias. His voyage, as well as his predecessors', was filled with adventures, shooting incidents with local tribes, and threats of mutiny from his crew. Dias ended up sailing only around Africa thinking that if one continues to sail forward, he would arrive to India sooner or later.

An OLED Ring for Bluetooth Notifications Wearables are the next frontier of amateur electronics, and [Kevin]’s Arduboy ring is one of the best examples we’ve seen yet. Inside the Arduboy is an nRF51822 – a chipset with Bluetooth Low Energy, an ARM Cortex M0,256k of Flash, and 16k of RAM. There’s also a an OLED and a touch button for displaying notifications from a phone, with the ability to reply to these notifications.

PROTECT IP Act Breaks the Internet I am writing to you as a voter in your district. I urge you to vote "no" on cloture for S. 968, the PROTECT IP Act, on Jan. 24th. The PROTECT IP Act is dangerous, ineffective, and short-sighted. It does not deserve floor consideration. I urge my representative to vote "no" on SOPA, the corresponding House bill. Over coming days you'll be hearing from the many businesses, advocacy organizations, and ordinary Americans who oppose this legislation because of the myriad ways in which it will stifle free speech and innovation.
