Getty's 'Lean In' stock photos challenge female stereotypes

Scantily clad women holding power tools or sitting behind secretaries' desks have become the norm in stock photo databases used in the media. But now Getty Images has joined LeanIn.org, a non-profit founded by Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, to try to change the way women are portrayed. They have released a collection of photos that challenge these stereotypes and offer a more empowered vision of modern women and girls. The BBC spoke to Pamela Grossman, director of visual trends at Getty Images, and Jessica Bennett, an editor for LeanIn.org. TAG is also wrapping up a quiz-based game for the United Nations Development Fund for Women. Ruiz and TAG worked with Toronto’s METRAC (Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children) to create Finding Zoe. METRAC was interested in a game for youth, ages 8-14, addressing abusive dating relationships and gender stereotyping. Susana Ruiz « Transmedia International Masterclass. Susana Ruiz is a media artist, designer and doctoral candidate at the University of Southern California focused on the areas of design and social justice, digital media and learning, and games and art practice.

Ruiz is co-founder of Take Action Games, a collaborative design studio specializing in games for change. Ruiz is currently working with the Independent Television Service (ITVS) on their Women and Girls Lead Initiative, and is a Games For Change advisory board member. TAG is an award winning design studio specializing in games that traverse the intersections of art, activism, ethics and documentary. TAG’s philosophy is rooted in creating experiences that encompass the personal stories of individuals combined with the unique affordance of games to model broader historical, political, and societal systems.
