Freaks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freaks is a 1932 American Pre-Code horror film about sideshow performers, directed and produced by Tod Browning and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , with a cast mostly composed of actual carnival ( funfair ) performers. The film was based on Tod Robbins ' 1923 short story " Spurs ". Director Browning took the exceptional step of casting real people with deformities as the eponymous sideshow "freaks," rather than using costumes and makeup. Browning had been a member of a traveling circus in his early years, and much of the film was drawn from his personal experiences. In the film, the physically deformed "freaks" are inherently trusting and honorable people, while the real monsters are two of the "normal" members of the circus who conspire to murder one of the performers to obtain his large inheritance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freaks

When it was all over, I felt exhausted, but also possessed of a strange need to scream, or laugh, or run all the way home, or pick up parked cars and flip them over. The film was Martin Scorsese 's Raging Bull – or, to give it the title that appeared on screen, RagingBull; it was run together, like GoodFellas.

The Marx Brothers were an American family comedy act, originally from New York City , that enjoyed success in Vaudeville , Broadway , and motion pictures from the early 1900s to around 1950. Five of the Marx Brothers’ thirteen feature films were selected by the American Film Institute as among the top 100 comedy films , with two of them ( Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera ) in the top twelve. The core of the act was the three elder brothers, Chico , Harpo and Groucho ; each developed a highly distinctive stage persona. The two younger brothers, Gummo and Zeppo , did not develop their stage characters to the same extent, and eventually left the act to pursue other careers.
