Monsanto Faced Citizens' Tribunal For 'Crimes Against Nature And Humanity'

In a twist of irony, this same weekend Monsanto was tried for “ecocide” and “crimes against humanity and nature” at the International People’s Court in The Hague, Netherlands. Monsanto, recently purchased by German multinational Bayer AG, has faced consumer criticism for decades for its production of genetically-modified seeds and a range of pesticide products including its herbicide known as “Roundup.” During the weekend-long symbolic tribunal, 750 participants came to The Hague representing 30 countries while thousands of others followed the event online with livestreaming and social media.

While Monsanto was invited to the Tribunal, it opted not to appear in defense of its actions. Instead, the corporation issued a statement in five languages arrogantly indicating that the participants of the tribunal are “pushing” the wrong issues since the real discussion is about feeding the world. The trial — led by environmental activist groups — will take place next year at the International People’s Court in The Hague, Netherlands on October 16, 2016 (incidentally and aptly, on World Food Day). The trial is a “global citizens’ tribunal” that will include dozens of international food, agriculture and environmental justice groups, including: Millions against Monsanto, the Organic Consumers Association, Regeneration International and IFOAM Organics International—an umbrella organization of over 800 affiliated organizations in 100 countries. According to the press release issued by the Organic Consumers Association, “an international court of lawyers and judges will assess the potential criminal liability of Monsanto for damages inflicted on human health and the environment.” Love This?
