Letter of support signed by 84 prof's & PhD's: Febr25, 2014. ‘Good job! Right on’ VU-weekblad Ad Valvas publiceerde gisteren een steunbetuiging aan Peter Nijkamp, ondertekend door 84 economen (3 opstellers en 81 mede-ondertekenaars) uit de hele wereld.
Zij stuurden deze brief aan VU-rector magnificus Van der Duyn Schouten, KNAW-president Clevers en voorzitter Dittrich van universiteitenvereniging VSNU (aan koning Willem Alexander hebben ze niet gedacht). Omdat in de brief een misleidende voorstelling van zaken wordt gegeven van de zaak-Nijkamp, heb ik alle 84 ondertekenaars een e-mail gestuurd met de vraag hoe zij zich eigenlijk hebben geïnformeerd. Van de 81 mede-ondertekenaars heb ik tot nu toe welgeteld twee reacties gekregen. Een Portugese econoom bestempelde het ontvangen van een e-mail van mij als een “invasie” en was vooral verontrust dat ik zijn e-mailadres kende (dat had ik gevonden, oh wonder, met googlen). Op mijn vragen gaf hij geen antwoord: hij vond mijn toon niet deugen.

Dat blijkt uit een aantal brieven die Advalvas in handen heeft gekregen. Behalve de 84 internationale wetenschappers die in een brief aan het college van bestuur uiting hebben gegeven aan hun ongerustheid over de manier waarop de aanklacht tegen Nijkamp wordt behandeld, heeft een aantal VU-hoogleraren het college eveneens een brief gestuurd. De internationale leescommissie van Nijkamps (voormalige) promovenda Karima Kourtit heeft het college van decanen aangeschreven.
De rector magnificus van de Universiteit Leiden, Carel Stolker, heeft vorige maand in zijn toespraak ter gelegenheid van de Dies Natalis aandacht gevraagd voor de rechten van beschuldigde wetenschappers als Nijkamp, ‘Zeker omdat de enkele aanklacht al een einde kan maken aan iemands wetenschappelijke carrière.’
