Following his earthworks (1967-69) and body-works came the installations (from 1972 onwards), using puppets as their main theme (the harrowing piece " Attempt to Raise Hell " at the Pompidou Center ). Later on, at the end of the seventies, Oppenheim produced what he calls his " machine pieces " which, by denying the object its sculptural status, are presented as complex constructions, systems open to both an aleatory and an enigmatic mode of functioning... http://www.dennis-oppenheim.com/

Dennis Oppenheim (1938), Artist

http://www.newarttv.com/Dennis+Oppenheim Dennis Oppenheim, who died last month, granted me this studio visit and interview in December of 2007. I set the footage aside, primarily because Dennis was unwell when we did the interview - he was already dealing with a serious medical problem, and he looked frail, vulnerable, preoccupied, and I wasn't entirely comfortable about presenting him on video in his condition. But with his characteristic generosity he spent two hours with me reflecting on his work, and as I reviewed the footage in the wake of his death I saw that whatever ailment he had, had done nothing to dull a remarkable intelligence, thoughtfulness and self-knowledge. So here it is after all these years, 13 minutes with Dennis Oppenheim, one of the seminal figures of land art, leading figure in public art, and as the arc of his career demonstrates, possessed of a constant urge toward creative exploration and reinvention.

While not nearly as frenetic as 2009-2010’s “World Tour”, my 2012 schedule is none-the-less picking up pace. Between confirmed and tentative installation gigs, confirmed speaking engagements, pick up art handler/preparator work, confirmed and unconfirmed permanent commissions, and invited residencies my dates available have been trimmed back to around December 2012-january 2013 as next available. http://www.jonathanbrilliant.com/
