Luilu Metallurgical Plant – Katanga Mining Limited

It comprises three roasters, leaching circuits and electrolytic cells for copper and cobalt production. It has a potential capacity of 175,000 tonnes of copper and 8,000 tonnes of cobalt per year. The Luilu facility operates by first roasting the sulphide concentrate and then subjecting it to a process of leaching and purification. Oxide concentrate is added to the sulfide leach stream for direct leaching of the concentrate. Finally, electro-winning is used to produce copper cathode. When Katanga took control of the site from the DRC’s state-owned mining company Gécamines, the facility was in a semi-derelict state. During 2008 a new roaster will be constructed and leaching and electro-winning capacity doubled under Phase II of the project. Kamoto Concentrator – Katanga Mining Limited. KOV Open Pit Mine – Katanga Mining Limited. The KOV mine is the largest high-grade copper resource in the world.

KOV Open Pit Mine – Katanga Mining Limited

It comprises four ore bodies, Kamoto East, Oliveira, Virgule and FNSR, accessed via two pits, Kamoto East and KOV. The Kamoto East pit was operational from 1960 to 1985 and the adjacent KOV pit from 1983 onwards, both under the auspices of the DRC’s state-owned mining company Gécamines. From 1960 to 2000(when mining activities ceased and the pit flooded), 38 million tonnes of ore containing 2.2 million tonnes of copper and almost 200,000 tonnes of cobalt had been mined. The average copper grade during this period was 5.8% and the average cobalt grade was 0.5%.

The dewatering program began in late 2006 and will continue during 2008. The Krupp waste crusher, conveyor and stacker system that serves the KOV pit was installed in the early 1990s. Kamoto Underground Mine – Katanga Mining Limited. The Kamoto underground mine is Katanga’s primary sulfide ore source.

Kamoto Underground Mine – Katanga Mining Limited

It entered operation in 1969 under the DRC’s state-owned mining company Gécamines. During the 1980s it produced an average of three million tonnes of ore per year and, prior to its restart under Katanga’s ownership, the mine had produced a total 59.3 million tonnes of ore, with an average copper grade of 4.21% and an average cobalt grade of 0.37%. The mine has twin six-and-a-half by six-meter ramp declines, a service shaft and an 11,000 tonne per day production shaft. Following initial refurbishment and maintenance to the pump station, ventilation, crusher and winder, as well as the arrival of a new underground mining fleet, the mine restarted operations in March 2007 and is currently ramping up production. Mining is a combination of newly introduced longhole retreat stoping, and historical room and pillar method and cut and fill mining.
