Manchester Digital Laboratory. Calling all geeks, artists, designers, illustrators, hackers, innovators and idle dreamers; the Manchester Digital Laboratory is here for you!

Manchester Digital Laboratory

What is it? A 3000 sq. ft. former shop in the Northern Quarter – open when there’s an event happening. Check our calendar to see what’s going on. It’s a space you can get together with like-minded individuals and work on your urban gardening, crochet, hacking, programming, media arts, filmmaking, animating project without worrying that you’re in a library, coffee shop, pub or other unsuitable venue. We know hackers and craftspeople need work space and may need to get down and dirty – we also know sometimes you need a quiet area to present and show works to your peers. If you’re organising a workshop, meetup, unconference, user group, or knitting circle and want to use the space then drop us a line!

Why? Simple. How? This is a self-funded enterprise – there are no big backers and we’re not stacked with cash so mostly by begging, borrowing or stealing. CityCo. Launch of NQ Forum. Launch of NQ Forum Posted on 04 March 2014 by kevpeel.

Launch of NQ Forum

New Northern Quarter Forum launched. The bohemian district is setting up a forum of residents, retailers, restaurants and bars to decide its own future - instead of relying on the council On Monday March 24 we'll be launching the Northern Quarter Forum - a group bringing residents and businesses in the city's most exciting neighbourhood together to improve our community.

New Northern Quarter Forum launched

The idea came about from one of our open community meetings - a fortnightly series of 'roving surgeries' we hold around the city centre with residents (and businesses) from the surrounding area invited to attend, meet their local councillors and discuss local issues. In the city centre we want to end the transactional nature of political engagement - a resident contacts a councillor with a complaint, we do our best to fix it and report back (and take the credit!). This shouldn't be how it works. Northern Quarter community forum to launch. Residents and businesses are being urged to come together in a bid to improve the bohemian neighbourhood.

Reducing Social Isolation / Loneliness Grant Funding

One of the major issues facing Manchester is the loneliness and isolation of older people. Macc is running a grants programme on behalf of the Manchester Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) who want to work in alliance with voluntary sector organisations and social enterprises to discover the way forward for service provision to reduce social isolation and loneliness in Manchester. There will be two levels of grants, small grant, up to 10,000 and large grant from 10k to 50k and the maximum period of the grants will be 18 months.

Ancoats and Clayton Community First Panel

Year 4 funding will be available from April 2014. £30 Million is now available to fund community projects in some of the most deprived areas of the country. People will be encouraged to give time, expertise and resources towards the projects they identify in their areas. The government will match these pound for pound, helping to stimulate local action towards meeting community needs. In May 2011, Heritage Works completed an options appraisal study, examining the potential for future re-use of the Ancoats Dispensary building.

Heritage Works Buildings Preservation Trust: Projects: Ancoats Dispensary

The Dispensary is one of the few remaining buildings that remind us of the rich history of Ancoats. It provided much needed healthcare to the local community during the industrialisation of Manchester. Although finding a solution for the Dispensary was always going to be challenging, we were hopeful that the building's significance and its location at the edge of Manchester city centre, within New Islington Millennium Community, would generate the necessary interest and support from occupiers, grant funders and stakeholders. The building's derelict condition - roofless, windowless and with a gutted interior - would require considerable investment, however. Even the most favoured end-use - low cost flexible workspace - had a very substantial viability gap - in the region of £3 million for a scheme with an end value of perhaps £700,000.
