(SABC) The new ANC Mayor of the troubled Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Danny Jordaan, begins his first week in his municipal office on Monday morning in Port Elizabeth amid overwhelming expectations. The ruling party says while they understand his tight football schedule, they want him to spend at least 80% of his time sorting out the municipality's challenges. Jordaan was elected unopposed last week amid controversy as opposition parties boycotted his election.

He has already promised to set in place major interventions that will clean up the much contested metro. The ANC, however, say they have agreed with Jordaan to spend most of his time in his municipal office. (SABC) The National Working Committee of the ANC is expected to visit the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, on Monday to tackle service delivery challenges. This will coincide with South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan's commencement of his duties as mayor of the embattled municipality. Jordaan was elected unopposed last week amid controversy as opposition parties boycotted his election. This is the third time the top leadership of the ruling party will visit the municipality in a month. ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa says service delivery should be the new leadership's top priority. "We want to see an acceleration of service delivery; we want change things to move with speed, so that people can feel change in the leadership of the municipality. (SABC) South African Football Association (SAFA) boss Danny Jordaan is expected to be elected and sworn in as the new executive mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro in Port Elizabeth. This is despite threats by opposition parties to boycott the special council meeting on Thursday. The Democratic Alliance (DA), United Democratic Movement (UDM), Congress of the People (COPE) and African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), say they were informed late about the changing of the venue to a bigger venue in New Brighton township.

This paves the way for him to be elected executive mayor of the metro in a vote later on Friday, becoming the fourth in a period of six years. Jordaan’s candidacy was announced by the ANC Secretary-General, Gwede Mantashe after the resignation of the incumbent-mayor, 83-year old Ben Fihla.
