What does an instructional designer do? In the past few months, I’ve been asked by a number of different people what an instructional designer does and how to get into the field.

What does an instructional designer do?

I love instructional design because it is a field where I am constantly learning and I have a great variety in what I do. I use so many different skills—writing, web design, graphics, collaboration, planning, plus of course how people learn. Since this question has come up more than once, I thought it would be useful to collect all the information I have emailed people privately and post it here.

This will be a series of posts over the week or so. Blooms taxonomy teacher planning kit1 (1) InstaGrok.

Texas [Ed]Tech: Teaching Integer Rules with Google Sheets - Multiplication & Division

The beauty of a tool like Google Sheets is that students now have a place to explore integer relationships and discover these patterns on their own. In a previous post, I showed how Sheets can be used to help students explore the patterns produced by integer addition. By comparison, the rules for multiplication and divisions (same signs = positive, different signs = negative) are relatively straightforward. In this Sheet, students input positive and negative factors into the multiplication rows first, then answer the questions using the dropdowns. These are color-coded to make the patterns easy to recognize.

Great App Review Checklists for Teachers

I have probably reviewed a little over 200 apps in the last couple of years but when I first started reviewing apps there were not many guidelines and checklists as is the case now. With the help of carefully crafted rubrics like the ones below, teachers can now follow a set of guidelines to select the apps that can work for them in their teaching. Parents too can use these checklists to sift through the piles and handpick the ones to give their kids. It is of paramount importance that you keep apps evaluative rubrics at your disposal to turn to whenever you want to recommend an app for your students . Video: Lessons From a Competency-Based Education Experiment - Leadership & Governance

Young Paul LeBlanc, president of Southern New Hampshire University, has become a leading proponent of competency-based education, a way to award degrees based on testing and portfolios rather than "seat-time" in a traditional course. Last year the university started a competency-based degree program, called College for America, that has enrolled about 2,000 students. Mr. LeBlanc has been in Washington to counsel the U.S. JEFFREY R. PAUL J. JEFFREY R. PAUL J. When you flip that in a competency-based model, what happens is that learning becomes fixed and non-negotiable, and time becomes the variable. I think also equally important are the stories of the person who takes a year and a half to master the writing competency.

Re-assessing innovative assessment.

This blog post, which reflects on the key issues raised during a workshop held at the HEA enhancement event Ways of knowing, ways of learning: innovation in pedagogy for graduate success was compiled by Erica Morris, HEA Consultant in Academic Practice (erica.morris@heacademy.ac.uk).

Re-assessing innovative assessment

Over the last ten years or so, much thought has been given to the use of innovative assessment, and more generally, universities and colleges have focused on enhancing assessment practices. Initiatives, research and developments on assessment have led to a rich collection of established theoretical perspectives and good practice guidance for those seeking to make changes to how assessment in designed for students.

Want to help students improve their work? Mark them on their progress. When academics get stuck into their piles of marking this Christmas, most will be assessing work competitively – assigning marks to indicate how well a student has performed relative to their classmates.

Want to help students improve their work? Mark them on their progress

Competitive marking is the cornerstone of meritocracy and is widely supported by parents, teachers and students. But while this form of assessment may help the most successful students to progress, many do not achieve their potential.

Included on each page are references plus additional resources for further review. “Learning is a naturally active and normally volitional process of constructing meaning from information experience” (Wlodkowski, 2004).

What works best. This page has now been revised (May 2010) in the light of John Hattie's recent apparently definitive work Visible Learning; a synthesis of over 800 meta-analyses relating to achievement (London; Routledge, 2009). The first thing to change has been the title, which used to be "What works and what doesn't". Hattie points out that in education most things work, more or less. The questions are around those which work best and therefore best repay the effort invested. This site is mainly about your own individual practice as a teacher, and as such it tries to take into account your particular circumstances, such as the students you teach (assumed largely to be over school-age), your subject, your setting (school, college, university, work-based or informal adult education).

It recognises that it is difficult and even unreasonable to generalise, but we ought to set alongside this the results of very generalised research in the form of meta-analyses. Questions and Answers About Formative Assessment.
