The satellite record began at the end of a sea ice growth period. The post-1978 sea ice retreat isn't unusual. The early-to-mid-twentieth century was a time of ice melting. There is evidence of an ice-free Arctic during the Bronze Age/Holocene Optimum.

A new government report by Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans is a welcome cool-headed antidote to the sensational portrayal of the Arctic as a melting disaster that’s killing polar bears.

Canada's Cool-Headed Antidote To Hot Arctic Alarmism

We now leave this southern coronavirus hell to take you way, way up North to the Canadian Arctic where, according to a news report, “the frozen North is gone forever” and the “top of the world is turning upside down.” The sensational language was allegedly based on a new research report, Canada’s Oceans Now: Arctic Ecosystems, 2019, released on Earth Day last week by Bernadette Jordan, federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

The report received little attention outside of a Canadian Press story that tended to do what most media stories do when appraising material linked to climate change. Small research factoids are routinely morphed into asteroids of climate destruction. Sounds bad. Nor is it likely permanent. Fake News about Arctic Ice. Predictions: Poles Melting.

Time Magazine: Arctic Nearing 'Point Of No Return' Published on August 6, 2019 Written by Thomas D Willams PhD Climate alarmists continue to seek new vocabulary to express the apocalyptic urgency of their cause, with Time magazine now declaring that the Arctic is nearing a “point of no return,” thanks to global warming.

Time Magazine: Arctic Nearing 'Point Of No Return'

The latest omens of Earth’s demise have taken the form of “extreme weather events” experienced over the past two months in the globe’s far northern regions. “Plumes of smoke have been picked up by satellites from wildfires across Alaska and Siberia and Greenland has experienced rapid ice loss as usually frigid regions have experienced heatwaves and record temperatures,” Time‘s Jasmine Aguilera laments. Aguilera takes for granted that these extreme weather events are “caused by climate change,” since Timereaders apparently believe that there were no floods, forest fires, hurricanes, droughts, tornadoes, tidal waves, or monsoons prior to the Industrial Revolution. Arctic Glaciers ADVANCED 16 km During 2008-2016 In A Region That Was 6°C Warmer ~9,000 Years Ago

December 2018 Newly published science indicates glaciers in the High Arctic Svalbard/Barents Sea region have rapidly advanced in the last decade — surging 16 kilometers since 2008, which is the greatest ice growth since 1890. About 8,000 to 10,000 years ago, this region was 6°C warmer than today. Consequently, the region’s glaciers were much smaller (or non-existent) at that time and the sea ice was much less extensive (0-10% spring sea ice vs. today’s 80%).

Lovell et al., 2018. Climate alarmism paradigm protection at NSF - CFACT. In his landmark book “The Structure of Scientific Revolutions,” Thomas Kuhn discusses at great length how a scientific field can be captured by a system of false ideas, to the point where these beliefs determine what the legitimate scientific questions are.

Climate alarmism paradigm protection at NSF - CFACT

He called such belief systems “paradigms,” an example being the Earth centered model of the solar system. Kuhn had no name for the way that a paradigm shields the field from hard questions and contrary evidence, so I call it “paradigm protection.” Paradigm protection is rampant in the field of climate science, where the controlling paradigm is the idea that humans are causing dangerous climate change. The US National Science Foundation has just produced a remarkably clear example of alarmist paradigm protection. It is a multi-million dollar research funding Program cleverly titled “Navigating the New Arctic.” Despite the title, this research program is not about navigation. Arctic Warming Unalarming. Locations of arctic stations examined in this study An recent extensive analysis of Northern surface temperature records gives no support for Arctic “amplification” fears.

The Arctic has warmed at the same rate as Europe over the past two centuries. Heretofore, it has been supposed that any global warming would be amplified in the Arctic. This may still be true if urban heat island effects are responsible for part of the observed temperature increase at European stations. However, European and Arctic temperatures have remained closely synchronized for over 200 years during the rapid growth of urban centres. The Arctic: we don’t know as much about environmental change in the far north as we’d like to think. From The Conversation December 4, 2018 9.58am EST The first International Polar Year, held over 1882–1883, was an important event for science.

The Arctic: we don’t know as much about environmental change in the far north as we’d like to think

The year was the brainchild of Austrian explorer Karl Weyprecht who, after a few years on different research missions, realised that scientists were missing the big picture by not sharing information with each other. In 1875, at the annual meeting of German Scientists and Physicians in Graz, Austria, he proposed the setting up of an observational network of research stations to monitor the Arctic climate. Steve Goddard on Twitter: “You can’t stop “long term decline” This week, after reviewing his own new data, NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally said: “At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.” December 12, 2007. Volcanism Altering Bering Sea Eco-Systems, Not Climate Change. Published on July 9, 2019 Written by James Edward Kamis Volcanism, primarily ocean floor in nature, is the most feasible and plausible cause of recent alterations to the Bering Sea physical and biological systems, not climate change.

Volcanism Altering Bering Sea Eco-Systems, Not Climate Change

Since 2014, multiple changes to the Bering Sea’s physical and biological systems such as a rise in seawater temperature, sea ice melting, alteration of commercial fish migration patterns and the very sudden die-off of certain sea bird species have made front-page news. Many scientists have been quick to attribute these supposedly ‘unnatural’ events to human-induced atmospheric warming or climate change without mentioning or giving due consideration to emissions from active volcanic features that circumvent the entire Bering Sea and populate its seafloor.

So, let’s take a moment to review Bering Sea volcanic activity and its likely effect on the area’s physical and biological systems. Then things changed very rapidly. From Yale Climate Connections we heard last week about Nunavut melting and a theatrical production to spread news and concerns about this dangerous development. “I come from a place of rugged mountains, imperial glaciers and tender-covered permafrost. The characters in her play include polar bears, an Inuit goddess, scientists, and coast guard officers – all working together to save their land. No doubt her personal experience and feelings for her Nunavut are sincere and profound. Half a dozen recent papers show that man’s responsibility for Arctic ice melt has in reality been grossly exaggerated and that Arctic sea ice science is fraught with far greater uncertainty than what we are often led to believe.

One paper even notes that Arctic sea ice decline could be over. Alarmists often claim that almost all of the global warming occurring over the past 50 years is almost completely due to human activity, i.e. the burning of fossil fuels” Here they ignore the high levels of solar activity over the course of the entire 20th century and the warm phases of the oceanic cycles experienced over the past decades. With such an obvious sloppy scientific approach, it is of course little wonder climate science is met with so much skepticism. 15 New Papers: Scientists Abandoning Claims Of Dominant Man-Made Influence On Arctic Climate. Gajewski, 2015 Three years ago a cogent paper was published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature that was surprisingly candid in its rejection of the position that the substantial warming and sea ice reduction in the Arctic occurring since the late 1970s should be predominantly attributed to anthropogenic forcing.
