CNN is breathless over a "Gigantic hole two-thirds the size of Manhattan discovered in Antarctic glacier.
" I'm sure the reporters wish the hole actually were in Manhattan and included Trump Tower, but alas, the hole is far away from their nemesis, the president. They describe it as "a massive cavity" that "has been discovered growing in an Antarctic glacier, signaling rapid ice decay that has shocked scientists. " It's growing at an "explosive rate" beneath the Thwaites Glacier, they anxiously report. CNN's primary concern is that the melting glacier will flood the world, including its television studios. How big is this "massive cavity"? It's just a small hole within a glacier the size of Florida. By comparison, Florida is 65,755 square miles. Not only CNN, but its other media brethren are also in a panic over this news. Hotter, Colder–It’s Still Your Fault! By Paul Homewood h/t Dave Ward Emerging from the ice for a brief growing season every Antarctic summer, the lush green mosses of East Antarctica are finally succumbing to climate change.
That is according to a study of the small, ancient and hardy plants – carried out over more than a decade. This revealed that vegetation in East Antarctica is changing rapidly in response to a drying climate. Antarctica is rising in response to change that started with end of last ice age. How fast can Antarctica rise when the ice melts?
Earth finally free to rise after hundreds of thousands of years of ice suppression. That, of course, is a provocative statement, however, from the point of view of the Earth, it is actually true. The Pine Island, Thwaites, Haynes, Smith and Kohler Glaciers, located in the Amundsen Sea Embayment of West Antarctica (see the map below), have been the stars of many alarming headlines regarding the accelerating pace of ice melt (also here and here), the possible collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet, and sea level rise. And it is true: The Amundsen Sea Embayment is one of the most important regions of the world in terms of ice melt. These glaciers contain enough ice to cover an area the size of Denmark (43,000 square kilometres) with more than 11 kilometres of ice, which would raise the global sea level by 1.2 metres if it were to melt all at once.
Our new study published in Science has some answers. Why Gravity Data Is Worthless In The Hands Of Climate Scientists. Graphs like the one above purporting to ice loss in Greenland and Antarctica are worthless, for several reasons.
The are generated by people with a global warming agenda who don’t understand the mathematics and science underlying their calculations.Gravity data shouldn’t change as the ice grows or melts. 9.4 Isostasy – Physical Geology. NSF study: ‘…current carbon dioxide levels are not enough to destabilize the land-based ice on Antarctica’ We covered this yesterday, but today the official press release came out, so worth covering again.
Via Eurekalert Land-based portion of massive East Antarctic ice sheet retreated little during past eight million years But increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels could affect stability and potential for sea level rise. New Paper Debunks Ad Hoc ‘Explanation’ That Antarctic Sea Ice Has Been Growing Since ’80s Due To Human Activity. “In science and philosophy, ad hoc means the addition of extraneous hypotheses to a theory to save it from being falsified.
Ad hoc hypotheses compensate for anomalies not anticipated by the theory in its unmodified form. Scientists are often skeptical of scientific theories that rely on frequent, unsupported adjustments to sustain them. New Antarctic Sea Ice Video – shows cycles and ice growth. The video animation Jeff put together is well worth watching, see it below the “read more” line. – Anthony. Greenhouse gases are warming the world—but chilling Antarctica. Here’s why. The greenhouse gases that are warming the globe actually cool Antarctica much of the year, a new study confirms.
The odd trend doesn’t break the laws of physics, but it does highlight what a strange place Earth’s southernmost continent truly is. Antarctica is home to many extremes. It’s the world’s highest continent, with an average elevation just a shade under 2300 meters. And despite its ice, it’s technically a desert thanks to a paucity of precipitation. This lack of moisture is one of the key factors behind the region’s “negative greenhouse effect,” says Sergio Sejas, an atmospheric scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, who led a newly published investigation of this atmospheric quirk.
Cool greenhouse gases high in Earth’s atmosphere typically trap heat by absorbing infrared radiation emitted by our planet’s warm surface before it reaches space. In general, CO2 is thoroughly mixed throughout the atmosphere. Antarctic Sea Ice Claims Don’t Stand Up To Scrutiny. By Paul Homewood From Yahoo: A few days ago, the US National Snow and Ice Data Center announced that the Antarctic sea ice contracted to just 883,015 sq. miles, which is the smallest on record.
Experts assert that, if changes are not made to pollution and our fossil fuel industry, a number of species will be threatened as sea levels (and temperatures) continue to rise. A Review of the Record 2013 Southern Hemispheric Sea-Ice Extent. Paper Reviewed Reid, P., Stammerjohn, S., Massom, R., Scambos, T. and Lieser, J. 2015. The record 2013 Southern Hemisphere sea-ice extent maximum. Annals of Glaciology 56: 99-106 Although sea-ice extent in the Northern Hemisphere has been declining for quite some time, Reid et al. (2015) report that the sea-ice extent of the Southern Hemisphere has actually risen, and by approximately "1% per decade since 1979, the year when a continuous record of multi-frequency passive microwave satellite observations began," as has been described by Watkins and Simmonds (2000), Comiso and Nishio (2008), Turner et al. (2009), Comiso (2010) and Parkinson and Cavalieri (2012).
The five researchers also report that on the record-breaking day in 2013, "sea-ice extent was greater than the 30-year average (1981-2010) in nearly all Southern Ocean regions. " In fact, they say that "sea-ice extent was well above the long-term average or at a record for the entire year" (see figure below).

Antarctic ice on October 6, 2015 Guest essay by Julius Sanks When discussing climate with people who do not have technical backgrounds, I have learned much of the climate discussion is a foreign language to them.
Phrases like “Dalton minimum” or “Atlantic multidecadal oscillation” make their eyes glaze over. So, I take them through a few examples of how much energy is involved and how miniscule human activity is by comparison. ANTARCTIC KRILL DECLINE: Industrial fishing or Climate Change? - Principia Scientific International. Published on Written by Myles, Principia Scientific International Researcher It is generally reported by ecologists and the climate science camp that there has been a dangerous decline in the species of krill known as Euphausia Superba over the past few decades and the cause is the melting ice of Antarctica by global warming.
The Krill sometimes feed on the underside of ice. A simple picture, less sea ice from the predicted global warming and there is less Krill.
