Why Arm Design is Relevant Before getting into the details of arm design, I want to take a moment to discuss why arm design is important.

The Science of Skinning: Comrades-in-Arms Minecraft Blog

I feel that the arm is largely undervalued as a component of an overall skin. This is partly because of its unusual dimensions (4x12x4) that make it hard to work with, partly because static previews only show skins from the front, back, and side view and ignore other views, and partly because lighting options and arm geometry choices are generally not well understood. The following figure is a little complex to understand but it helps to illustrate why arm design, in particular the side of the arm, is important.

Assume that you are in-game looking at one of your friends who is modeling a hot new skin he/she downloaded by doing a slow turn in front of you. There are many ways to go about pushing pixels, and this is just one of them. Sadly, this tutorial will not teach you how to draw or come up with nice ideas, sorry. Also I will not go into program-specific details, you need to have some basic familiarity with the software you want to use. Fire up your app of choice (mine is GraFX2, but you may be more comfortable with Photoshop, GIMP or what-have-you), and make a new 16*16 pixel document. What's this?! It's...it's...Final Fantasy 1: "This tutorial is about learning to make GOOD art...So why is a screenshot from a NES game here? They only use 16 colors, don't they? " Now the first one is the floor tile...Unfortunately, as you can see in the full screenshot, this one doesn't even come close to killing off the grid look, but we'll just say it's because it was one of the originals and perfecting the graphics wasn't exactly the highest priority back then. This is dithering at the simplest level. Now the first set of bricks is the good old plastic, ugly, and fake looking set of bricks. Layout-wise, take note of the dirt. So here's a closeup of a section. Now this is to be a cave floor. Now THAT'S a dark and eerie floor...It's the use of black (while I DID darken the shades on the rocks a bit, I'll explain that in a moment...Trust me though on what I'm saying here, heh).
