As Twihards throng the multiplexes for the release of Breaking Dawn Part 1, it’s time to reassess Stephen King’s 1981 hypothesis (in Danse Macabre) that the oral penetration promised by vampires constitutes “the ultimate zipless fuck”.

Vampires: No Longer “The Ultimate Zipless Fuck?”

Today’s vampires penetrate both ends simultaneously – at least they do in the stories aimed at grown-ups – and are looking for long-term commitment. When a vampire says “I’ll love you forever”, he really means it. Battle Of The Books: Genre Vs. Literary. Scratch the surface of most any discussion about fiction, and what you find seething under there is that old tension between the literary and the genre.

Battle Of The Books: Genre Vs. Literary

Or maybe it’s a dynamo, an engine—two magnets spinning around each other, making energy, spinning out stories, or maybe it’s some yin-yang thing, and we’re supposed to understand that you can’t recognize the good if you don’t have some bad around to compare it to. I’m being charitable here, too. At least for the moment. Never mind that genre fiction always get the short end of the measuring stick, that it’s built into the language, even: literary writers go ‘slumming,’ they step in the ‘gutter,’ they take a tour through the ‘ghetto’—this is insulting more than just writers—or, conversely, they ‘elevate’ genre just by trafficking in its conventions, by showing these scrubby, cash-grubbing writers how a real story’s told.

I plan to continue publishing in philosophy, but my primary project at the moment is a science fiction novel exploring certain plot twists inspired by a philosophical theory of mind that is currently not well known outside of contemporary academic philosophy. The cutting-edge nature of this theory gives me an opportunity to explore new conceptual territory of interest to fans of mind-bending, plot-twisty suspense novels. The unconventional, philosophically-based nature of the story requires that the overall style of the novel be more character-driven than the average science-fiction or suspense story, but I am nevertheless doing my best to keep the plot moving at a comfortable pace.

I will need to find a literary agent who is willing to work with intellectually challenging, controversial material with a variety of intensely erotic elements.
