Global Resistance and Rising Anarchism - The New Politics of the 21st Century. Devon Douglas-BowersActivist Post A number of occurrences have taken place over the past 13 years since the rise of the new millennium; we have seen and are seeing the rise of popular movements all over the world and a resistance to the forces of imperialism, capitalism, and subjugation, from the most recent Arab Spring to the world’s largest coordinated anti-war protest in history with the global protests against the Iraq War[1], to the rise of the Occupy Movement and the rise of indigenous resistance as can be seen in the Idle No More campaign of Canada’s First Nations population.

Russell Brand on revolution: “We no longer have the luxury of tradition” IIn the summer of 1970, a 34-year-old Welsh artist with a shock of prematurely white hair and a thick, moustache-less goatee was asked by the Times to draw political cartoons during the general election campaign.

Idealistic and mistrustful of authority, Ralph Steadman saw little that was likeable or even distinguishable in the Conservative Party’s Edward Heath and Labour’s Harold Wilson. But he had four children to support from a recently ended marriage and needed a steady income, so he accepted the assignment – and got on with causing offence. Steadman’s first cartoon for the newspaper, featuring the diminutive Mr Weath and Mr Hilson, as he named them, along with the Liberal Party leader, Jeremy Thorpe, was titled Happiness Is a Small Politician.

Another used the three faces to form the undulations of a landscape, which he called The Wasteland. Dear Ralph . . . Now, a few months later, Thompson was eager to capitalise on the success by taking on more assignments with Steadman. The One Thing All Parents Should Do For Their Baby. (Photo: Reuters/Chaiwat Subprasom) We have a living tradition of those who have struggled for Gandhi's vision of sustainability and self-reliance, for socialist ideas of egalitarianism and social justice. Now a growing band of university students are plotting a quiet revolution against orthodox free-market teaching, arguing that alternative ways of thinking have been pushed to the margins. Economics undergraduates at the University of Manchester have formed the Post-Crash Economics Society, which they hope will be copied by universities across the country.

The organisers criticise university courses for doing little to explain why economists failed to warn about the global financial crisis and for having too heavy a focus on training students for City jobs. Can local currencies help advance global sustainability? Care to buy a loaf of bread?

Can local currencies help advance global sustainability?

If you are in Baltimore, Bristol, Calgary, or many other cities worldwide, you might just be able to pay for it using a very local currency. In Bristol, businesses can even pay taxes using local currency – the Bristol Pound – and their mayor is taking his entire salary in the new currency. New systems, like Bay Bucks in San Francisco, are popping up with increasing regularity. Local currencies are not legal tender; no one is forced to use or accept them.

And by definition, they can be exchanged for goods only in a limited region. The core reason for the uptake of local currencies is their promise to serve the real needs of local people in ways that national monetary and financial systems do not. Current monetary systems fail because they burden the public with debt and don't put new money into circulation when and where it is most needed. People at all levels of society are urgently looking for solutions, and local currency systems could offer hope. Bob Marley Inspired Headphones, Audio Systems & Accessories.
