Vaccine Search Engine. Does NZ really have a science denial problem? People rejecting facts is a problem around the world — but New Zealand's pre-eminent scientist is unaware of any hard evidence to show it's on the rise here. In its annual report, the Environmental Protection Agency pointed to a "groundswell" of opposition to perceived bureaucracy and "a growing scepticism" about science and the role of experts. New Zealand had its share of science-deniers, the EPA stated, who opposed fluoride, 1080, vaccination, genetic modification and much more, with their views reinforced and nurtured in the "unmoderated milieu" of the internet. The Prime Minister's chief science advisor, Professor Sir Peter Gluckman, has been giving talks overseas and published discussion papers about the "post-truth" issue. Was anti-science really now a big problem? "I think that is true," he said. "But whether it's true in New Zealand or not, beyond that general statement, it's difficult to know.

Not long after my son was born, dry patches of irritated skin began to appear on his face. I lathered the little guy up with all types of oils and creams but nothing worked so, like most parents, I turned to the internet. After asking a question about eczema on Facebook, I was sent a link to a closed group called The Healing Tribe: Resolve Allergies, Eczema + More... Naturally. There are over 11,900 members from all over the world in The Healing Tribe and it grows a little bigger each week.

I texted a friend who was already a member. I could see why The Healing Tribe was popular; it’s thousands of people who take the time to share their thoughts about health, illness and remedies. The group is predominantly used by mums who, like me, are crowdsourcing for help with their children’s health. And it seemed to all be closely watched over by the group's creator, Maryana Lishman. 1. – Epidemics – Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand

It usually refers to infectious diseases, but it is also possible to have epidemics of non-infectious diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, and conditions such as obesity. A pandemic occurs when an epidemic spreads from one country to another and becomes prevalent around the world. New Zealand has experienced three pandemics – all influenza – in 1890–94, 1918 and 2009.

An endemic disease is continually present in a population at a low rate, or with a low death rate. An example of this in New Zealand in the 21st century was hepatitis B. Measuring epidemics The severity of an epidemic is usually measured by its mortality rate (the number of people who die from the disease). Vaccines ProCon.org.
