These light bulbs sure have. Instead of hanging upright like they’re intended, these ‘Light Blubs’ appear lazy and somewhat sick, drooping down and chilling on tables and chairs. The Bavinger House is history. Bruce Goff’s most spectacular architectural creation was severely damaged last spring, whether due to storms or to the owner following through on a threat to demolish Oklahoma’s most significant piece of residential architecture remains unclear. Whatever the cause, the owner, Bob Bavinger, has consistently refused to let anyone onto the property to inspect the damage. With no access, there has been no opportunity to work with Bavinger to perhaps find a way to save the spiral-shaped structure that, since its completion in 1955, has been featured in countless books and periodicals for its outstanding and thoroughly original design. Recently, someone from the Facebook group “You Know You’re From Norman If…” posted about how much they missed the Bavinger House and it reminded me that I have some photos. In December 2010, my boys and I had the pleasure of visiting the Bavinger House in Norman, OK. Designed by architect Bruce Goff and owned by OU Professor Bavinger and his family, the house was passed down to his son once the professor passed away. The Bavinger House. It was designed by Bruce Goff and built by Eugene Bavinger, a former art professor at the University of Oklahoma, between 1950 and 1955. Bavinger House - Landmark. So starts a 1951 Life Magazine article on the Ford House in Aurora, Illinois, one of Goff’s many astounding and imaginative designs that are some of the most structurally forward-thinking of mid-century modern architecture. Quonset ribs form the Ford House’s birdcage dome, with interior circles looping through with bedroom wings, supported by coal walls decorated with ordinary marbles and an iridescent glass cullet. Cullet is a hardened deposit that forms in glass furnaces and has to be periodically cleaned out. Oklahoma Modern: Bavinger House is No More. Rumors began circulating Monday afternoon that the Bavinger House in Norman, Oklahoma had been demolished.

Conflicting reports have been circulating today and confirmation has been difficult due to the heavily wooded area where the house is located. Oklahoma Gazette's Chicken Fried News: R.I.P., The Bavinger House: 1955-2011. Local architecture nerds decry the move as a travesty; the Bavinger House Conservancy sees it as “an opportunity for everyone to own a part of history,” per its website, “for this holiday season.”
