London

A Tale of Two Cities London is as much about wide-open spaces and leafy escapes as it is high-density, sight-packed exploration. Central London is where you will find the major museums, galleries and most iconic sights, but visit Hampstead Heath or the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to escape the crowds and view the city’s greener hues up close. Or venture even further out to Kew Gardens, Richmond or Hampton Court Palace for excellent panoramas of riverside London. Diversity This city is very multicultural, with a third of all Londoners foreign born, representing 270 different nationalities. Why I love London By Steve Fallon, Author Like most Londoners, I revel in all our familiar landmarks – Big Ben, Tower Bridge, the murky Thames, the London Eye.

The origin is unknown, although the strongest theory is that it's a contraction of pomegranate which was Australian rhyming slang for immigrant. Sassenach: Used by the Scots and Irish to describe the English. The term is derived from the Scottish Gaelic for Saxon. Les goddams: A historic term of abuse coined by the French to denote the English, who were notorious for frequent swearing (God damn!) During the Hundred Years War (1337-1453).

The following laws are allegedly still in existence on the statute book in England and Wales: It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament wearing a suit of armour. It is illegal to eat mince pies on Christmas Day. It could be regarded as an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the Queen's image upside down. 69 Fun Facts about the UK. Background[edit] In 1957, Indonesia faced a series of crises, including the beginning of the Permesta rebellion in Makassar and the army takeover of authority in South Sumatra. One of the demands of the Permesta rebels was that 70 percent of the members of Sukarno's proposed National Council should be members from the regions (non-Javanese). Another demand was that the cabinet and National Council be led by the dual-leadership (Indonesian: dwitunggal) of Sukarno and former Vice-President Hatta.[1] In March 1957, Sukarno accepted the Army chief of staff General Abul Nasution's proposal for a declaration of martial law across the whole nation. This would put the military in charge, and would be a way to deal with the rebellious army commanders, as it would effectively legitimize them.[2]:243 In the face of a growing political crisis amid splits in the cabinet, Prime Minister Ali Sastroadmidjojo returned his mandate to the president on 14 March.
