Warriors of ancient civilizations would often display the severed heads of their rivals as a show of victory, but one unfortunate buck was no doubt all too ready to be rid of his opponent’s head.
With the help of his students, Luke Laha, a wildlife management instructor in Kansas, recently rescued an antler-locked deer that had been carrying around the head of the other buck for months. Laha told Outdoor Hub that coyotes had consumed the dead buck's body while still attached to the live buck. You can watch a video of the rescue and see a photo of the bucks on the Outdoor Hub. He first saw the deer while scouting out some territory in south-central Kansas a couple of months ago. At that time, the dead buck still had part of its body. They got on 4x4s and trailed the struggling buck, which fell every 20 feet or so.
