Daily chart: The South China Sea. How China Is Building the Biggest Commercial-Military Empire in History

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the sun famously never set on the British empire. A commanding navy enforced its will, yet all would have been lost if it were not for ports, roads, and railroads. The infrastructure that the British built everywhere they went embedded and enabled their power like bones and veins in a body. Great nations have done this since Rome paved 55,000 miles (89,000 km) of roads and aqueducts in Europe. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Russia and the United States established their own imprint, skewering and taming nearby territories with projects like the Trans-Siberian and the Trans-Continental railways. Now it’s the turn of the Chinese. 20 maps of India that explain the country. What better way to start this series of maps of India than looking into the country’s population?

4 Maps That Put China's & India's Populations Into Perspective

Similar to one of our earlier posts about 8 ways the US fits into the rest of the world, these maps show which countries’ populations would fit inside China and India, the world’s most and second most populous nations. The first map above shows just how many large countries it would take to equal the population of China. However, the maps below are if anything more surprising. Please note all 4 maps on this page are the work TeaDranks, who deserves all the credit.

The guided-missile destroyer USS Lassen breached the 12-nautical mile zone China claims around Subi and Mischief reefs in the Spratly archipelago. The US has confirmed the operation took place, apparently as part of its Freedom of Navigation programme. The operation is a challenge to China's claims over the artificial islands. India lost original forests 70 times Delhi’s area in 14 years

Or is it shrinking? The government claims a steady increase in the country’s forest turf since 1999. But official data indicate it may be missing the woods for the trees. Records show the country may have lost close to 10.6 million hectares, or about 70 times Delhi’s geographical area, of original forests between that year and 2013. This is more than three times the reported increase in the nation’s forest cover in this period and 15% of India’s existing green cover.

According to the biennial state of forest reports (SFRs) from the ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC), forest cover in the country went up by 3.3 million hectares between 1999 and 2013. The Centre and states have been using the numbers from these reports, the latest released last year, to pat themselves on the back for “stabilising” the country’s forest cover despite huge demand for land from industry and growing need for food, fodder and timber. Is China Beating The US In The South China Sea? As tensions continue to unfold in the South China Sea, the question many political observers are assessing is whether or not the United States is coming out on top. Certainly there has been a great deal of rhetoric emerging from the US on the subject in recent weeks and months. And this very week, the current vice president of the United States, Joe Biden, offered further confirmation of what he characterized as Chinese expansionism in this disputed territory. Every kid likes to draw. But in India, young people living in slums are using their sketching skills to spur urban change. As part of a broader civic campaign centered on "child clubs," groups of children are creating detailed "social maps" of their marginalized neighborhoods to voice their concerns about public space, as first reported in Citiscope, a CityLab partner site. Since 2011, UNICEF has been encouraging kids to use mobile technology and open data to map environmental and health issues near their homes.

India Targets Maoist Jungle Stronghold to Win Mining Riches. (Bloomberg) -- The hills above Sinu Tati’s village of Tikanpal in central India are known for two things: one of the world’s largest iron-ore deposits, and a jungle full of Maoist guerrillas who attack anyone trying to mine it. The district is a weather vane for a conflict that former premier Manmohan Singh called the greatest threat to India’s internal security, one that has killed more than 10,000 people in the past two decades and raged over a third of the country. GDP of China by province in 2020. Geopolítica en el Mar de China. Économie d’un méga-bidonville. Le dessous des Cartes. The mind-blowing growth in East Asian cities, visualized. How much change can happen in only one decade? If you’re looking at East Asia between 2000 and 2010, the answer is probably “more than you think.” Earlier this year, the World Bank put out a call to data specialists to find the most innovative and effective ways to visualize the fascinating data it had gathered on 869 urban areas in East Asia with more than 100,000 people each in 2010. Nadieh Bremer, an astronomer-turned-data analyst who runs the blog Visual Cinnamon, won that contest.

Here are a few stills from Bremer's interactive: As Bremer’s visualization shows, those 869 cities grew by one-third in just a decade. As of 2010, East Asia had 738 cities with between 100,00 and 1 million people, 123 cities with a population between 1 and 10 million, and 8 megacities with more than 10 million people. As the visualization suggests, urbanization is a powerful force for boosting economic growth and alleviating poverty.
