Most Beautiful Places In The World. Everyone views beauty in different ways and what one person considers to be beautiful may be completely different to how other people view it. These beautiful places from all around the world are, in their own right, beautiful. Consisting of everything from individual monuments to expanses of water and ancient villages to modern cities, they may not all be attracting, appealing or aesthetically pleasing to everyone, but to some, they are some of the most stunning places on earth. Pakistan is blessed with sights that are beautiful beyond words. Mother Nature has been very kind to Pakistan when it comes to natural beauty. Of course there are many incredible man-made structures built throughout the course of history but here we are just taking a look at the natural wonders of Pakistan.

How on earth do they manage to sell something with a solar panel, rechargeable battery, step-up converter, LED and the plastic and metal casing for a dollar/pound. You can't even buy the bare components for anywhere near that, in fact the solar panel alone would probably cost you five times the cost of the whole light!

This project is about hacking your solar lights to make them different colours and potentially increasing the battery life too.Solar lights are great to hack. They're cheap enough not to worry if you mess up, and very gratifying because they are effectively free to run due to being powered by sunlight. Here's the test subject for this project. A solar pillar light from a UK shop called Poundland (A British dollar store). If the LED pads have solder left across the holes then it can be removed with a bit of desoldering braid, which is a fine braided copper wire soaked in resin.

Now put in your new LED noting the polarity (long lead is positive). Ana Somnia - lights out! 10 Vestigial Traits You Didnt Know You Had. How Animals See the World. The human eye is pretty amazing, but there are some things it cannot do such as see ultraviolet light or detect images at a great distance. The visual capabilities on non-human creatures can help to open our eyes to the possibilities beyond our limited sight.

How To Mix Chalkboard Paint in Any Color. We love using chalkboards as backdrops for displays and parties (like this one here!). So we were super excited to learn that you can create your own custom colors-and it's really easy! We first learned how from Martha Stewart whose tutorial you can read here. She recommends that you use latex paint, but we tried it out with acrylic paints with much success. Here's how you too can create your own chalkboard paint... Supplies: 1/2 cup acrylic paint (choose any color you like, or mix colors together to make the perfect shade!) 1. 2.

Once your chalkboard has fully dried be sure to slate the surface before using it for the first time. Have fun creating any color combination you like!! A DRAMATIC SURPRISE ON A QUIET SQUARE. Denis Dutton: A Darwinian theory of beauty.

What causes the smell after rain?" Most people notice a distinctive smell in the air after it rains. It's frequently linked with spring, as the smell of fresh cut grass is associated with summer. You'll find it in a lot of poetry and also on many inspirational lists of things to be happy about. But what causes it? As it turns out, the smells people associate with rainstorms can be caused by a number of things. One of the more pleasant rain smells, the one we often notice in the woods, is actually caused by bacteria! Actinomycetes, a type of filamentous bacteria, grow in soil when conditions are damp and warm. Another sort of smell is caused by the acidity of rain. Another after-the-rain smell comes from volatile oils that plants and trees release.

These are a few common rain smells, but there are also all sorts of other scents after it rains. Art 1. Optical Design. Scientists discover most relaxing tune ever - Music. My.opera.com/jarkendia/homes/topics/chihiro02.JPG. Neonflames. Pondering a universe without purpose - latimes.com. The illusion of purpose and design is perhaps the most pervasive illusion about nature that science has to confront on a daily basis. Everywhere we look, it appears that the world was designed so that we could flourish.

The position of the Earth around the sun, the presence of organic materials and water and a warm climate — all make life on our planet possible. Yet, with perhaps 100 billion solar systems in our galaxy alone, with ubiquitous water, carbon and hydrogen, it isn't surprising that these conditions would arise somewhere. And as to the diversity of life on Earth — as Darwin described more than 150 years ago and experiments ever since have validated — natural selection in evolving life forms can establish both diversity and order without any governing plan. But science has taught us to think the unthinkable. Because when nature is the guide — rather than a priori prejudices, hopes, fears or desires — we are forced out of our comfort zone. And so we continue to be surprised. Centsational Girl & Blog Archive & Recycled Wine Barrel Planter. I know this happens to you. You see something in a catalog or online and you think to yourself, “I bet I could make that for less money” or “I think I could pull off a similar version, but give it my own twist”.

That’s just what happened when I spied the tiered recycled wine barrel planter in the Napa Style catalog for $299. As I mentioned yesterday, wine barrels are readily accessible where I’m from, and we can find them for as little as $20 a half barrel. (If you’re local, make a stop at Mission ACE on Highway 12, they’ll hook you up!) After we scored a few half barrels last week from our favorite source, the mister and I decided to build our own rustic planter, and for much less than the Napa Style version. Napa Style barrel planter, $299. CG barrel planter, $25. Wine barrels make fantastic planters season after season, and this version is an interesting variation on the ordinary half barrel planter. My design is different than the NS version which has 4 tiers and 6 planting areas.

How to Trick Your Brain for Happiness | Greater Good - StumbleUpon. This month, we feature videos of a Greater Good presentation by Rick Hanson, the best-selling author and trailblazing psychologist. In this excerpt from his talk, Dr. Hanson explains how we can take advantage of the brain’s natural “plasticity”—it’s ability to change shape over time. gobyg There’s this great line by Ani Tenzin Palmo, an English woman who spent 12 years in a cave in Tibet: “We do not know what a thought is, yet we’re thinking them all the time.”

It’s true. The amount of knowledge we have about the brain has doubled in the last 20 years. In recent years, though, we have started to better understand the neural bases of states like happiness, gratitude, resilience, love, compassion, and so forth. Ultimately, what this can mean is that with proper practice, we can increasingly trick our neural machinery to cultivate positive states of mind. But in order to understand how, you need to understand three important facts about the brain. So, how do we actually do this? 1. 2. 3. 11 cheap gifts guaranteed to impress science geeks | DVICE - StumbleUpon.

You’ve heard of the Manhattan Project — the Allied research and development program that resulted in two nuclear bombs being dropped on Japan and the end of World War II — and now it’s time to learn about one of its successors, Project Matterhorn, a Cold War program to control and harness thermonuclear reactions to create fusion power. Nuclear fusion occurs when two atoms fuse together (usually hydrogen) to form a heavier atom (helium), and releasing a vast amount of energy in the process. This process can only occur at incredibly high temperatures, such as the center of a star (such as our Sun). Every second, the Sun fuses 500 million tons of hydrogen into helium, releasing about 5 million tons of gamma rays that eventually heat and illuminate Earth. For a long time (Project Matterhorn started in 1951), nuclear fusion has been considered a very desirable power source because the fuel is virtually free, and the process releases vast amounts of energy and no pollutants.

Buckliball opens new avenue in design of foldable engineering structures. (PhysOrg.com) -- Motivated by the desire to determine the simplest 3-D structure that could take advantage of mechanical instability to collapse reversibly, a group of engineers at MIT and Harvard University were stymied — until one of them happened across a collapsible, spherical toy that resembled the structures they'd been exploring, but with a complex layout of 26 solid moving elements and 48 rotating hinges. The toy inspired the engineers to create the "buckliball," a hollow, spherical object made of soft rubber containing no moving parts, but fashioned with 24 carefully spaced dimples. When the air is sucked out of a buckliball with a syringe, the thin ligaments forming columns between lateral dimples collapse. This is the engineering equivalent of applying equal load on all beams in a structure simultaneously to induce buckling, a phenomenon first studied by mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1757.

Nature, it appears, has already figured this out. Your Age on Other Worlds | Exploratorium - StumbleUpon. Want to melt those years away? Artificially intelligent vs. artificially human: creating better NPCs. Usually, when we think of creating artificially intelligent characters in games, we think of making these characters smarter and better at responding to various situations. But at a Game Developers Conference presentation this week, two industry veterans suggested that we should take lessons learned from the study of human psychology to make characters more believably human, which doesn't necessarily mean "more intelligent.

" Conveying emotion is seven seconds Dave Mark of AI consulting firm Intrinsic Algorithm noted that the average character in many games is an enemy that only appears for seven seconds, which makes it hard to convey any meaningful characterization through traditional methods. Early game characters were like early silent movie characters, according to Mark, making exaggerated movements and using short audio "barks" to reveal their emotions. "Now, maybe it's time for us to learn how to be more subtle like the movie actors did.
