With a spacious loft, a college-age daughter in Boston, and lively friends, they are admirable, enviable contemporary urbanites with every reason, it seems, to be happy. Then Rebecca’s much younger look-alike brother, Ethan (known in the family as Mizzy, “the mistake”), shows up for a visit. A beautiful, beguiling twenty-three-year-old with a history of drug problems, Mizzy is wayward, at loose ends, looking for direction. And in his presence, Peter finds himself questioning his artists, their work, his career—the entire world he has so carefully constructed.

Like his legendary, Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, The Hours, Michael Cunningham’s masterly new novel is a heartbreaking look at the way we live now. BBC - Homepage. Azevedo's Reviews. English news and easy articles for students of English. EnglishClub.

“When people learn to play video games, they are learning a new literacy.”

Gaming as a Literacy

James Paul Gee. What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy, 2003. Gee makes a strong and articulate case for games (video and computer games) as a “semiotic domain”: a system of symbols or representations that create and communicate meaning. Print literacy is a semiotic domain. Like many of the other adjacent or overlapping literacies, gaming is different but it is still embedded in the construct of alphabet or notational literacy. “If we think first in terms of semiotic domains and not in terms of reading and writing as traditionally conceived, we can say that people are (or are not) literate (partially or fully) in a domain if they can recognize (the equivalent of ‘reading’) and/or produce (the equivalent of ‘writing’) meanings in the domain.” Video games, Perhaps most important here is the idea of “embodied experience.” Playing the game creates new solutions.

WAY was created by a multidisciplinary independent game design team named Coco & Co including Chris Bell from thatgamecompany (Flower, Flow).

In WAY, players are set it a 2D platforming game environment. At first, players navigate the game area alone, trying to make sense of what the game experience is meant to be. Moments later, the game reveals that your journey is happening simultaneously with another, unnamed, random player. Both players can see the movements of the other player but cannot interact directly. As the game progresses, players will be met with puzzle that they cannot solve alone.

WAY’s non-verbal gameplay is meant to elicit feelings of connection with random strangers from no particular part of the world. Contact: hello@thewillderness.com. Series. TeachingEnglish. Multiple uses of newspapers & magazines for ELT. Newspaper fire orange (Photo credit: NS Newsflash) I love using real things for teaching English. By “real things” I mean something from real life – and not something specially developed for learning or teaching. That’s why I prefer usual movies (and not educational ones – they are hardly very exiting, most of the times, usual radio and not “special English” stations, and usual newspapers (not the ones for ESL learners). Talking about the newspapers, their use in class (and outside too) is limitless. Actually, if you have a newspaper with you, you might never have enough time to even open your coursebook – that black&white double-pages provide tons of material.
