Matthews makes toys, like a soccer ball and jump rope, that generate electricity. Jane Chen invented a portable, low-cost incubator that keeps premature babies warm and saves lives. Erin Bagwell directed a documentary called Dream, Girl that celebrates the drive of female entrepreneurs. When TED asked filmmaker Gilly Barnes to craft video portraits of these three women to kick off the Clinique Smart Ideas competition, she was thrilled. All three radiate passion, but Barnes noticed another recurring theme in their stories: bravery. “The humility of that — the lack of pride, the willingness to look like a fool, the ballsiness of it,” said Barnes. People Offer Better Ideas When They Can’t See What Others Suggest. Companies from BMW to Kraft have invested a good deal in soliciting “open innovation” ideas from consumers, but the results have been underwhelming: Of the more than 23,000 ideas gathered by Dell’s Idea Storm site, only 2% have been put to use, and Starbucks has implemented an even smaller fraction of the 200,000 suggestions submitted to My Starbucks Idea (including 6,000 for new varieties of Frappuccino).

Inspired to do more? Dutch Innovators for Peace are one step ahead!

This time students, researchers, professionals and the odd journalist were welcomed to an event titled: ‘Dutch Innovators for Peace’. Set against the backdrop of a summer course on ‘Big Data’, this particular Inspirationlab aimed at bringing together the (sometimes technical) field of ‘Big Data’ with the peace and justice sectors. We may soon be driving on last year's plastic bags and bottles, fished out of the ocean.

These Lego-Like Roads Are Made From Plastic Trash

A new project in the Netherlands is turning plastic waste—especially scraps that couldn't be used for anything else—into new roads. "The concept is based on the use of all kinds of waste plastic, but mainly the part of the waste stream that doesn't already have 'high end' recycling applications and would ordinarily be burned," says Alex van de Wall, an innovation manager at KWS Infra, the company testing the new plastic roads. "One of the sources is the so-called plastic soup floating in our oceans. " Plastic roads have several advantages. Recycled plastic has a dramatically lower carbon footprint than making asphalt, which is responsible for 2% of global carbon emissions. What Apple, Lending Club, and AirBnB Know About Collaborating with Customers.

The idea of “co-creating” with customers has been circulating for years, but until recently few companies effectively exploited its power or understood its contribution to the bottom line.

What Apple, Lending Club, and AirBnB Know About Collaborating with Customers

True, customers can customize their M&Ms, build their own bikes with Trek Project One, create unique doors for their home at Jen-Weld, and design their own Nike running shoes. But these co-creation models produce only one-off physical goods, and none represents a fundamental shift in how these companies create value; they’re peripheral to the core business. Today, however, by exploiting new digital technologies, firms like Apple, Lending Club, and AirBnB have made customer co-creation of value central to their business models and in doing so now rank among the world’s most innovative and valuable firms.

Our research indicates that companies that make their customers partners, and share the value created, lead the pack on revenue growth, profit margins, capital efficiency, and enterprise value. Africa’s Maker Movement Offers Opportunity for Growth. In a glittering ceremony in Skhirat, Morocco, three African innovators emerged as winners in the annual Innovation Prize for Africa competition. The African Innovation Foundation, which organizes the event, focuses on identifying homegrown and scalable innovations that address local problems in Africa. From Foufoumix (a kitchen appliance to replace a mortar and pestle in fufu food preparation) to mimosa pudica solar (which generates electricity from a weed), they are cultivating a network of grassroots innovators of different levels of experience who offer new ways to fix problems in their communities. Designers like these have been historically neglected by African policymakers because of the largely unconventional nature of their enterprises. So despite Africa’s recognition as a land of relentless ingenuity with revered tradition of local creativity, the records for taking those sparks of genius to the next level has been discouraging.
