Part of me feels as if I can breathe a sigh of relief–it was strange walking around in 70 degree weather on Christmas Eve, and it made me wonder if we’d all get our comeuppance in January–and part of me is totally unprepared. My favorite way of adjusting has been to dive into my favorite cozy foods, and this rustic cabbage, chickpea, and wild rice soup is now one of them. I made it on New Year’s Eve, and because it makes a whole eight portions, I’m still gratefully slurping up the leftovers.

After a long, bumpy flight, I don’t think I was ever happier to stand on solid ground on this side of the Atlantic. Now, where’s my tea? About this time of the year, I usually find myself thumbing through my copy of Jamie Oliver’s Great Britain, trying to get reacquainted with all things British. A few weeks ago, I found myself bookmarking a recipe called “Mighty Mulligatawny.” The traditional recipe usually includes some sort of meat (chicken or lamb), but I wanted to make a vegan version. Since I also had Brussels sprouts, I decided to roast them and serve them alongside the stew. At the last minute I stirred in some wilting arugula that was beyond a salad.
