Layout. Sorry it's been so long....Happy New Year.

layout

I hope the layout posts have been interesting. When I first went to CalArts, I was so convinced that I was going to be an animator that I paid no attention to learning about layout. Then, when I found my way into the story department, I really struggled to grasp how to (as I saw it back then) "fill out the background behind the characters". But over the years, I realized that layout is so much more than just a backdrop for characters. The layout and the characters should work in harmony when it comes to telling a story and informing the audience about the emotions that the character is feeling.

So I have a certain passion for layout because I had to work so hard to understand how it works. Anyway, a few more thoughts on layout (and how it relates to storyboarding): Create a clear "stage" for the action. This may seem obvious, but a big part of the layout's function is to create a "stage" for the action that's going to happen within the scene. 100,000 Stars. Just as with scripts, movie concept artists go through many a draft until they get the final approval for their character portrayals.

Early Movie Concept Art: See What Your Favorite Characters Could’ve Looked Like

Take Shrek for example. A recent photo posted to Reddit revealed that our favorite green ogre with a hero’s heart started out looking more like the star of ‘Coneheads.’ And Yoda, ‘Star Wars” supreme Jedi master, was originally depicted as a combination of hobbit and elf from the upcoming ‘Hobbit‘ trilogy. It’s safe to say that if things had gone differently — maybe if one day Pixar studio reps had drank too much coffee than usual and approved the wrong sketches — all these classic characters, from ‘X-Men‘ mutants to Woody and Buzz in ‘Toy Story,’ wouldn’t have looked the way they do today. So, just for fun, we’ve tracked down some early (and we mean early) movie concept art and sketches to see what was going on in these artists’ heads when they first started imagining characters into existence.

Fans of Brave's heroine, Merida, have been up in arms the last week over a Disney redesign that left the princess looking skinnier, sexier, and more in line with the rest of the company’s animated princesses.

While it was announced that Disney was backing away from the redesign, the newest word is that the new Merida was only created for a specific line of limited edition merchandise and that the company isn’t going to pull the design at all. Here are some other ways the Disney princesses may have been portrayed. 1. Sexy Sirens J. 2. If you think Merida was over sexualized in the new Disney design, just wait until you see DeviantArt user Bianni’s series featuring princesses in their lingerie.
