They both approach the learning process from relatively different stands:Bloom's taxonomy seem to emphasize the categorization of tasks in a way that corresponds with students thinking levels ( e,g knowing, understanding, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating). Depth of Knowledge (DOK), on the hand, shifts the focus from the product or end result to focusing on the cognitive and thinking process. It extends beyond the what and digs deeper into the how. Here is a beautiful visual I came across today on this Pinterest board and which illustrates the difference between Blooms' taxonomy and Depth of Knowledge.

If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section . As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps.

And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy Create Evaluate Annalyse Apply. The buzz that the Modern Taxonomy Wheel generated over the last couple of weeks has not yet died out and now we have a new updated wheel from the same guy Allan Carrington.

We love Allan's work and we find it really interesting. His wheels come along in such a visually attractive way summarizing most of the apps and web tools we have been sharing here with you. If you already had a chance to have a look at the previous wheel and compare it with this new one you will notice that Allan has brought about some new updates to the new wheel.

There is now a particular shared focus on both SAMR model and Bloom's digital taxonomy to help teachers better leverage technology in their teaching. In this six-part series, I will highlight apps useful for developing higher order thinking skills in grades K-5 classrooms. Each list will highlight a few apps that connect to the various stages on Bloom's continuum of learning. Given the size and current exponential growth of the app market, I will also assist educators in setting criteria necessary to identify apps that maintain the integrity of teaching for thinking.

To me this work (created and shared by UAF eLearning Faculty Resources) represents the core of digitally-based learning. It also chimes in with what we have said about purposeful use of technology in instruction. Having clear goals about what you want to target in your teaching using technology will definitely help your learners make the best of that technology. Here is an example of one of the readings of the different components of the wheel. For instance as a teacher keen on enhancing my professional development (goal), I can make use of social bookmarking websites or blogging platforms (tools ) to reach my purpose.
