Afghanistan in the 1950s and 60s - In Focus Fractured by internal conflict and foreign intervention for centuries, Afghanistan made several tentative steps toward modernization in the mid-20th century. In the 1950s and 1960s, some of the biggest strides were made toward a more liberal and westernized lifestyle, while trying to maintain a respect for more conservative factions. Though officially a neutral nation, Afghanistan was courted and influenced by the U.S. and Soviet Union during the Cold War, accepting Soviet machinery and weapons, and U.S. financial aid. This time was a brief, relatively peaceful era, when modern buildings were constructed in Kabul alongside older traditional mud structures, when burqas became optional for a time, and the country appeared to be on a path toward a more open, prosperous society. Progress was halted in the 1970s, as a series of bloody coups, invasions, and civil wars began, continuing to this day, reversing almost all of the steps toward modernization taken in the 50s and 60s.

When I was putting in the equipment order at the studio we were shooting at last month, I noticed they had a couple of them in house. Having never worked with them before and knowing I wanted to get a tight portrait to accompany the opener for the feature I was doing on political campaign manager, Doug Rubin, I figured why not?

Mexican Photographers Document Their “World In Transition” Mexican photography is known for its quality and powerful artistry; its content and its story telling. What is lost in the American view of Mexico seems to be just what its photography provides: culture, beauty, and the life of its people. Many Americans are detached from their close and lively neighbor seeing it as a tourist attraction, a place with nice beaches and cool drinks, or another menial cousin country in need of help.

Photo by Yusuke Harada from “Behind the War on Terror” on SocialDocumentary.net. SocialDocumentary.net (SDN) was founded on the belief that documentary photographers can play a valuable role in raising awareness about complex global issues. Often a photographer will spend years on the ground immersed in the culture, geography and politics of a situation. The photographer’s work might be purchased by a newspaper, magazine or Web site to illustrate an article, but almost invariably the photo is used to illustrate a point conceived by the buyer of the image and the photographer has little or no control over the writing and editing. Our Web site was conceived to honor the integrity of the photographic image and the insights of photographers from around the world.
