The hand The hands are a notorious source of frustration. This section won't concentrate on the muscle structure, since the hand is very complex in this regard, and knowing this won't help much in drawing them. Instead, we'll look at proportions, range of motion, and possible simplifications. Structure and proportions Figure 2.20. Foreshortening Tricks Hi folks! Tutorial Tuesday is going to be a basic one – I’m a bit under the weather currently so this may not be the best post, but I want to give you something that I feel is important in the world of drawing – some pointers on foreshortening. Check this out. Foreshortening is basically an optical illusion created from a compressed looking drawing in perspective. This perspective is distorted in order to create a false sense of depth, and is used a lot in comics – Superman flying with his outstretched arm coming out of the page, or a fist connecting with a villain’s face, etc. These comic drawings you see that appear to come off the page use some form of foreshortening to create that illusion.

If you're like me, then you've probably spent a lot of time in high school class daydreaming and doodling a thousand perfect cartoon waves in your notebook. He's won numerous awards including the gold medal from The Society of Illustrators New York in 2009. Gottardo's clever illustrations show us why a minimalist approach can go a long way in telling a story. By taking out all that's unnecessary and distilling ideas down to very basic forms and shapes, Gottardo makes us believe that complicated concepts can be illustrated in surprisingly simple ways. Love the sweet and surreal nature to these. Added: After we finished this post, we got in touch with Gottardo for an interview.
20 Amazing Artist-Inspired Tattoos [Editor's note: While your Flavorwire editors take a much-needed holiday break, we're revisiting some of our most popular features of the year. This post was originally published February 16, 2011.] If we’re being honest, most of us will never own a work of art by a famous artist. And while back in college, it might have been okay to pay homage to one of the greats with a poster print from the museum, these days when it comes to the artwork that hangs on our walls, we tend to opt for original pieces by emerging (read: more affordable) talents. A few enterprising souls have found a way to sidestep the issue completely by displaying famous works of art directly on their bodies. Click through for some of our favorite examples, and if you happen to have an art-inspired tattoo, be sure to tell us about it in the comments.
