Oven-Bag Pasteurization Pictorial. This method was first brought to my attention by our fellow member, 6Tango.

Oven-Bag Pasteurization Pictorial

It is a great way for the pasteurization of straw/compost/dung. I have noticed that unlike the conventional method of "cooking" your bulk substrates in a pillowcase submerged in water, there is no strong odor, no loss of nutrients and no excess water drainage. Chap2 - chap2.pdf.   Case Study: Yosemite National Park. Pasteurization is a heat treatment process traditionally used to make milk safe for human consumption.

  Case Study: Yosemite National Park

By heating a substance to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time, one kills all harmful bacteria and creates a safe product. California’s Yosemite National Park and the U.S. National Forest Service experimented by using the technique of pasteurization on the product of composting toilets. The goal of the experiment was to find whether or not pasteurizing human waste would result in pathogen free compost. By eliminating pathogens in the compost, it is possible to use human waste to aid in the growing of safe food gardens (Lachapelle, 1997).

Cold Water Straw Fermentation. Hey, so we’re really stoked to share this easy, fun, DIY technique for treating your straw for cultivation that doesn’t require the needless waste of wood or fossil fuels: Cold water pasteurization!

Cold Water Straw Fermentation

Simple and scalable, this method is a great technique to have in your toolbox if you’re doing low-tech cultivation. It prevents the cultivator from having to use fossil fuels and emit CO2 and doesn’t require any fancy equipment. Essentially a fermentation process, this method kills off competitors to your spawn by the simple act of submersion in water over a period of days. During the submersion process the anaerobic microorganisms live and grow while all the aerobic (oxygen loving) microorganisms die. When the water is removed after a week, the anaerobic bacteria die as soon as they are out in the open, leaving “clean” straw to use for inoculation.

Easy Compost Recipie that works - Substrates

#1Here is something that I found on the net for making mushroom compost: ------------------- Notes: Well made compost is blackish and has a lightly carmel type coating covering the straw. Over composting will lower mushroom yields. Compost is pasteurized to kill any existing undesirable fungi growing in the compost. It can then be inoculated with mushroom spawn. How to cultivate Phellinus linteus? - Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms. Well after considering that this is a polypore it seemed like I would start there.

how to cultivate Phellinus linteus? - Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms

At the beginning of the Polypores section of GGMM, Stamets mentions having successfully cultivated a list of other Polypore species, which he doesn't give growing parameters for, which includs Phellinus linteus. So I'll be approaching this like reishi/turkeytail and doing a few different things at once to see what works best or doesn't work at all. SO a variation of Grain to sawdust blocks, sawdust to supplemented sawdust/woodchips, LC to sawdust to supplemented sawdust/woodchips.Supplemented and not supplemented/grain spawn vs sawdust spawn etc. Quite an endeavor, I'm not sure how long to let them colonize. MicroFarm - Mushrooms

Worm beds, or bins, are cleaned out and renewed regularly. A suggested start is producing a mushroom crop, which requires steam pasteurization of the bin, and semi-sterilization of straw in a boiling water-bath to pasteurize the straw, which is afterwards inoculated with the mushroom spawn and then covered to seal out invasion of undesirable species. The mushroom crop is watered by drip irrigation which will later serve worm requirements and green grocery production in the same beds, or bins. The purpose of the straw is to introduce high-carbon content organic matter which has a very high air-to-solid ratio. In other words, it is light and fluffy to start.

The purpose of the mushrooms is to predigest the straw and add some (low) nutrient value of proteins and enzymes of the mushroom body which produces the mushroom fruiting caps on the surface. J’ai essayer d’effectuer une traduction d’un schéma de Paul Stamets (extrait de Growing gourmet and medical mushrooms) expliquant les différentes phases de la culture fongique.

I have acquired some wood fuel pellets and will give the peroxide protocol a try soon. I will also try spawning on the heavy side as you suggest. I also have found a local supplier for the Aspen animal bedding. Thanks again for your help. It's a pleasure to be with the group. --- In NAMA_mushroom_cultivation@yahoogroups.com, "ronspin@... Most other species of edible mushrooms are so particular about their environment that growing them in captivity requires a lot of careful work beyond what most people are willing to attempt. Pleurotus Ostreatus, on the other hand, is such a thriving and eager producer that it can be "copied" in your own home with a simple non-sterile procedure.
