Institute for Astronomy Press Release:Found: A Strange Lonely Planet without a Star

This free-floating planet, dubbed PSO J318.5-22, is just 80 light-years away from Earth and has a mass only six times that of Jupiter. The planet formed a mere 12 million years ago—a newborn in planet lifetimes. New drug mimics the beneficial effects of exercise. A drug known as SR9009, which is currently under development at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), increases the level of metabolic activity in skeletal muscles of mice.

New drug mimics the beneficial effects of exercise

Treated mice become lean, develop larger muscles and can run much longer distances simply by taking SR9009, which mimics the effects of aerobic exercise. If similar effects can be obtained in people, the reversal of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and perhaps Type-II diabetes might be the very welcome result. The drug was developed by Professor Thomas Burris, who found that it was able to reduce obesity in populations of mice. It binds to and activates a protein called Rev-ErbAα, which influences fat and sugar burning in the liver, production of fat cells, and the body's inflammatory response.

No Battery Required for This Wireless Device

Soon it might not, thanks to a new technology that not only uses TV and Wi-Fi signals for device communication, it taps those signals as a power source. No batteries required. PHOTOS: Tasty Tech Eye Candy of the Week Developed by researchers from the University of Washington, the technology is known as “ambient backscatter” and could potentially create networks of devices and sensors that can transmit information by reflecting existing signals to exchange information, without the need for internal batteries. “We can repurpose wireless signals that are already around us into both a source of power and a communication medium,” lead researcher Shyam Gollakota, a UW assistant professor of computer science and engineering, said in a press release.

Researchers built small, credit card-sized devices equipped with antennas that detect, harness and reflect those signals to similar devices. Via University of Washington. Hallucigenia. Hallucigenia is a genus of Cambrian animals known from articulated fossils in exceptional Burgess Shale-type deposits in Canada and China, and from isolated spines around the world.

Hallucigenia

Its quirky name reflects its unusual appearance and eccentric history of study; when it was erected as a genus, the animal was reconstructed upside down and back to front. Hallucigenia is now recognized as a "lobopodian worm" and is considered to represent an early ancestor of the living velvet worms, close relatives of arthropods. Princess Margriet Francisca of the Netherlands (born 19 January 1943) is the third daughter of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.

Princess Margriet of the Netherlands

As an aunt of the reigning monarch, King Willem-Alexander, she is a member of the Dutch Royal House and currently eighth and last in the line of succession to the Dutch throne.[1] Princess Margriet has often represented the monarch at official or semi-official events. Some of these functions have taken her back to Canada, the country where she was born de facto, and to events organised by the Dutch merchant navy of which she is a patron. Birth and Canada[edit] The Princess was born in The Ottawa Hospital,[2] Ottawa, Ontario, as the family had been living in Canada since June 1940 after the occupation of the Netherlands by Nazi Germany. It is a common misconception that the Canadian government declared the maternity ward to be Dutch territory. Namesake and christening[edit] After the war[edit] Design Secrets of Medieval Castles. Mealybugs - Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust - Sydney, Australia

They have a worldwide distribution, occurring in all except the polar regions, and are one of the most economically important groups of insects known to humans because they attack many cultivated food and ornamental crops. Mealybugs are so named because many of the known species are covered in a whitish ‘mealy’ wax, which helps retard the loss of water from their soft bodies. They generally prefer warm, humid, sheltered sites away from adverse environmental conditions and natural enemies. Different species of mealybugs prefer different feeding sites - some species feed in and under bark, while others feed on fruits, flowers or seed heads. Homing pigeon. White Homing pigeon, sitting The homing pigeon is a variety of domestic pigeon derived from the Rock Pigeon (Columba livia domestica) selectively bred to find its way home over extremely long distances.[1] The wild rock pigeon has an innate homing ability,[2] meaning that it will generally return to its nest and mate.

This made it relatively easy to breed from the birds that repeatedly found their way home over long distances. Flights as long as 1,800 km (1,100 miles) have been recorded by birds in competitive pigeon racing.[3] Their average flying speed over moderate distances is around 80 km/h (50 miles per hour) but speeds of up to 140 km/h (90 miles per hour) have been observed in top racers for short distances. Homing pigeons are called messenger or carrier pigeons when they are used to carry messages. They were used in many places in the world and in wars. Sexual dimorphism[edit] Male and female pigeons also show different behaviours. Reproduction[edit] History[edit] [edit] Doomsday rule. Marshall Islands stick chart. Überseemuseum Bremen 2009 063 Significance of stick charts to the history of cartography[edit] The stick charts are a significant contribution to the history of cartography because they represent a system of mapping ocean swells, which was never before accomplished.

They also use different materials from those common in other parts of the world. They are an indication that ancient maps may have looked very different, and encoded different features from the earth, than the maps we use today. Black tie. Men's black tie dress (double-breasted jacket) History[edit] When the dinner jacket (tuxedo in American English) first came into fashion in the Victorian era, it was used as a less formal alternative for the tailcoat which men of the upper classes wore every evening. Thus it was worn with the standard accompaniments for the evening tailcoat at the time: matching trousers, white or black waistcoat, white bow tie, white detachable wing-collar formal shirt and black formal shoes.

Republic of Molossia. Molossia, officially the Republic of Molossia, is a micronation, founded by Kevin Baugh, humorously as a "dictatorial banana-republic" and headquartered solely from a tiny home near Dayton, Nevada. It consists of Baugh's house (known as Government House), bathroom, about 0.001 acres (4 m2) of land, as well as another property surrounded on all sides by Nevada. It formerly claimed a property in Pennsylvania as well. According to author John Ryan, Molossia is "a hobby that has been pushed to the nth degree.
