I know I'm going to make any number of bad choices as I go along on a panel, a page, a project. The trick is to eventually recognize them so I don't make them again. That's how I've handled things for more than twenty years now. Still, it's hard to look at old work and see choices I would never make today. Every artist wishes that they could go back in time, deliver a swat to the back of their own head, and say, “Don't do that!” So I asked some experienced artists, “If you could go back and tell your rookie self something about their work—some mistake to avoid, some important thing to emphasize—what would you say?”

All too often now, a new comic is released domestically that depicts a superhero or criminal doing heroic and/or criminal stuff…but wait, there’s a twist, I assure you! They’re all sponging from the same bucket. All of them. I will no longer encourage aspiring artists to attend art school. I just won’t do it. Unless you’re given a full ride scholarship (or have parents with money to burn), attending art school is a waste of your money. I have a diploma from the best public art school in the nation. Prior to that I attended the best private art school in the nation. But I am saddened and ashamed at art schools and their blatant exploitation of students. This is embarrassing. Artists are neither doctors nor lawyers.
