All In » Sincerely, Natalie Reed

I quit. Consider this my act of serving the movement my divorce papers. There is a lot I’ve been thinking about lately, and I’ve been doing a great deal of reappraisal of how I relate to Atheism, to Skepticism, how I see myself fitting into it. The truth is that I’ve sort of found myself having lost faith in the faithless, as silly as that sounds, and no longer believing whether this is what I want my fight to be and the people with whom I wish to fight. One way or another, I would have ended up writing this post sooner rather than later, but recent events have led me to feel like this is the moment it needs to be.

I don’t know how many of you know or are invested in the story of how and why Thunderf00t was expelled from Freethought Blogs. Thunderf00t saw the tweet, and responded with accusations that I was a liar. The content of the e-mails didn’t bother me at all. Natalie Reed is my safety net. Pagan Atheists: Yes, we exist, by Stifyn Emrys. Can atheists be Pagans?

Pagan Atheists: Yes, we exist, by Stifyn Emrys

To me, the answer to that question seems easy. Of course they can. But when I brought up the subject recently, I realized the answer wasn’t nearly so clear-cut for many people … and that a few objected vehemently to the very suggestion that these two philosophies were compatible. One person even suggested that I was doing Paganism a grave disservice by even suggesting such a notion. This person had spent a good deal of effort convincing some folks who identified themselves as Christians that Pagans weren’t “godless.” Certainly, not all Pagans are godless, just as not all Pagans are Wiccans. In fact, a survey I conducted online last summer found that the vast majority of respondents identified the most important element in Paganism as “reverence for nature.” When asked whether worship of the gods was a fundamental component of Paganism, a majority – 53 percent – said it wasn’t.

Reverence for nature fills that role. Sagan’s example. ATHEIST_CHURCH_1. The God Delusion. "My name is Emily Lacock and I'm an Ex Mormon." The Freedom From Religion Foundation has sued to abolish the practice and won its initial court victory. Today’s celebration of the tradition takes place under the President’s order to appeal that decision. The struggle shows a classic case of a social-political movement that is arguably legally valid but politically toxic. In short, it highlights the reason that atheism continues to struggle for political status to match the growing proportion of religious non-believers in the electorate — a grotesque and vindictive intolerance and hatred towards religious that is vastly disproportionate to the actual issues. The result is that the legal battle is disconnected from the battle for hearts and minds, and even potentially valid complaints from atheists wind up just making them look bad.

She then proceeded to write a series of attacks on religious belief (discussed here, here, here, here, and here) in which her resentful dislike of religion was matched only by her total, absolute ignorance of the subject. It now turns out that she reflects the emerging trend of atheism today. In the past, public atheists were expected to know something about Christianity and belief in God even as they were denying their validity. But today, as discusssed by Peter Steinfels in an interesting article in the New York Times, the foremost atheists are pure bigots. Since the Steinfels piece is accessible online only for subscribers, I am reproducing it below. - end of initial entry - Carl Simpson writes: I’ve noticed a curious thing about the Dawkins/Harris crowd.
