DIY Vertical Garden - How To Plant Projects

The last time we attempted to foster a plant, it wasn’t pretty — let’s just say we may be the only people on earth able to kill a cactus (not kidding). And while we’re constantly ogling the pretty, plant-laden decor that fills our favorite local restaurants and boutiques, we aren’t so successful when recreating our own iterations … until now. We’ve tapped Leigh Okies and Allison Futeral, the adorable twosome behind dreamy Temescal Alley haven Crimson Horticultural Rarities, to show us how to whip up three, easy-as-pie plant DIY projects — charming vertical garden included!

Trust, these ladies have the greenest thumbs we’ve seen yet (just take a peek into their flourishing shop and you’ll see how seriously they take the craft). So, if you're ready to get your urban jungle on in a cinch, let’s dig in, shall we? Ex Ikea Upright Bookcases now Mid Century Modern Sideboards. Living Cube Furniture. Designer Transforms Old Bike into Pedal-powered Elevator.

After completing his gorgeous 30 foot high treehouse, Ethan Schussler scoffed at the idea of having to climb up and down a giant ladder all day.

Designer Transforms Old Bike into Pedal-powered Elevator

Rather than abandoned his tree top escape, the designer put an old bicycle to the test. Customizing it to move along a giant chain, Schussler transformed the bike into a personal elevator, which slowly rises to the treehouse’s entrance by pedaling. Lugging a thirty foot ladder to the forest is an annoyance on its own, not to mention having to climb up and down the endless rungs anytime something is needed from the forest floor. Schussler’s solution not only gets him quickly into his treehouse perch, but also recycles an old bike that was laying around. The pedal powered elevator started out as an old twenty speed bicycle. Getting back down is the easy part, with the gear tension tweaked so a slow, smooth descent makes for a safe return to the ground. Via This is Colossal Images © Ethan Schussler. Their versatile Keystone connectors can be used to quickly and easily fasten together different parts. The tiny sculptural fitting can be either shipped from their Rotterdam studio, or 3D printed as an open source design. Keystones are light, 3D printed parts that can be created on-site, so DIYers can create their own furniture using locally available materials. The tiny connector can be easily tightened with a standard screwdriver to turn assorted pieces of wood or old furniture parts into brand new tables, coat racks, and other items.

NYC Students Cook With Solar Powered Pizza Boxes at Union Square Greenmarket

Students from Edward R. Murrow and James Madison high schools presented a clever collection of fun and exciting green home designs at the Union Square Greenmarket yesterday — including solar powered pizza boxes and a creative cardboard model of a futuristic green city. The displays, sponsored by GrowNYC, were created entirely from recyclable and biodegradable materials, and combined a touch of simplicity with a huge amount of youthful creativity. Stationed right in front of the steps of the North Plaza of Union Square, students of Edward R. Murrow High Schools attracted quiet a lot of attention as they conducted cooking demos on their solar powered pizza box ovens. The students placed cheese pizza and a thermometer in each box to demonstrate just how hot the boxes can get.
