http://1stholistic.com/meditation/hol_meditation_taoist_meditation.htm Taoist meditation methods have many points in common with Hindu and Buddhist systems, but the Taoist way is less abstract and far more down-to-earth than the contemplative traditions which evolved in India. The primary hallmark of Taoist meditation is the generation, transformation, and circulation of internal energy. Once the meditator has 'achieved energy' (deh-chee), it can be applied to promoting health and longevity, nurturing the 'spiritual embryo' of immortality, martial arts, healing, painting and poetry, sensual self-indulgence, or whatever else the adept wishes to do with it.

http://www.eastern-philosophy-and-meditation.com/taoist-meditation-techniques.html A good reference book for Taoist meditation techniques is Gateway to Wisdom by John Blofeld. Blofeld’s book describes the main Taoist meditation techniques, which can be practiced alone without the aid of a teacher. He stresses that there is no substitute for a teacher in the later stages but that the journey can be begun by the novice using the methods described by him. In some 90 concise pages Blofeld describes such essentials as Taoist concepts, attitude, mode of living and basic meditative techniques. He also describes the more advanced Taoist meditation techniques of intimate communion with nature, Cherishing the One, Conservation of the three treasures, Healing yoga and supportive practices.

http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2011/04/resilience_for_the_rest_of_us.html If you've suffered a major failure, take the sage advice given by psychologist Martin Seligman in the HBR article " Building Resilience ." Talk to yourself. Give yourself a cognitive intervention and counter defeatist thinking with an optimistic attitude. Challenge your downbeat thinking and replace it with a positive outlook. But, fortunately, major failures come along rarely in life. What about bouncing back from the more frequent annoying screwups, minor setbacks and irritating upsets that are routine in any leader's life?

Before each meditation exercise it is worth spending a few minutes relaxing the body. One way is to imagine/feel the tension moving out of your muscles and down your body so that all the tension finally runs through your feet and into the ground. Sit with a straight back, but do not overdo it so that the back becomes tense. Concentrate on focusing your awareness/attention on specific muscles of your body. http://www.meditationworkshop.org/meditation_exercises/relaxation_exercise/

How Meditation May Change the Brain - NYTimes.com

Getty Images Over the December holidays, my husband went on a 10-day silent meditation retreat. Not my idea of fun, but he came back rejuvenated and energetic. He said the experience was so transformational that he has committed to meditating for two hours daily, one hour in the morning and one in the evening, until the end of March. He’s running an experiment to determine whether and how meditation actually improves the quality of his life. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/28/how-meditation-may-change-the-brain/
Health Hint: Breathing Exercises It is thought by many cultures that the process of breathing is the essence of being. A rhythmic process of expansion and contraction, breathing is one example of the consistent polarity we see in nature such as night and day, wake and sleep, seasonal growth and decay and ultimately life and death. In yoga, the breath is known as prana or a universal energy that can be used to find a balance between the body-mind, the conscoius-unconscoius, and the sympathetic-parasympathetic nervous system. Unlike other bodily functions, the breath is easily used to communicate between these systems, which gives us an excellent tool to help facilitate positive change. http://www.amsa.org/healingthehealer/breathing.cfm

Visualization of Cellular Healing (#1) When you go to a doctor, s/he prescribes a medication for you to take, or a treatment you will undergo, your body starts the healing process before the medicine is in your system or the exercise or surgical procedure has taken place. For most people, just seeing a doctor gives confidence that healing will occur. Depending on the patient’s cultural background, this is true whether the physician is a neurosurgeon at the Mayo Clinic or a tribal witch doctor. This is attributable to an extraordinary healing ability of the body by a process known as the placebo effect. What happens is that healing starts when you believe it will occur.

Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging : Mindfulness practice leads to increases in regional brain gray matter density

Received 26 March 2010 ; received in revised form 9 August 2010 ; accepted 11 August 2010. Buddhist Meditation and Health Disease of the modern age, such as cancer, AIDS or psychological conditions caused by the stress and strain of daily life, have complicated symptoms and are progressively more difficult to treat. Consequently, modern medicine has started to look for different methods of treatment to cure such conditions and to help people get their lives back on an even keel again. This kind of research is carried out objectively within the confine of the medical science. However, on a more spiritual level, we can find within Buddhism various principles and practices which can be used to bring peace and happiness to the mind and the good health to the body. In particular, meditation has brought beneficial effects to the many people who have learned how to practice it.
