Should we be worried if our homes are soon smarter than we are?

It’s called the Internet of Things (IoT). For the tech industry, it’s the Next Big Thing, alongside big data, though in fact that pair are often just two sides of the same coin. The basic idea is that since computing devices are getting smaller and cheaper, and wireless network technology is becoming ubiquitous, it will soon be feasible to have trillions of tiny, networked computers embedded in everything. They can sense changes, turning things on and off, making decisions about whether to open a door or close a valve or order fresh supplies of milk, you name it, the computers communicating with one another and shipping data to server farms all over the place.

As ever with digital technology, there’s an underlying rationality to lots of this. “Because every home should be a smart home this Christmas,” burbles an ad from Samsung, “we’re treating you to some fantastic deals. Paul Ford: What is Code? A computer is a clock with benefits.

Have you ever wondered how many people walk past your shop?

Placemeter Sensor offers a window into activity outside your window

Or drive past your adverts? A new device is aimed at giving people that information, which might otherwise remain inaccessible. The Placemeter Sensor sticks to the inside of a window and counts people, vehicles, bicycles and more. Placemeter calls its sensor an "urban measurement tool" and says it can reveal hidden patterns and opportunities in the movement around towns and cities. The device itself is a discrete 2.25 x 5.5 x 0.75-in (57 x 140 x 19-mm) unit, and requires only power and Wi-Fi to begin measuring.

The unit contains an optic sensor that captures video with a 54 x 41-degree angle-of-view and a field-of-view of 6.5 x 4.26 ft at 6.56 ft (2.0 x 1.33 m at 2 m). The sensor is designed to fit just inside a window frame, ideally only as high as the second floor. SolderSmoke Daily News. - A blog about RTL-SDR (RTL2832) and cheap software defined radio. I started trying some of the ceramic coated pans a few years back and have found one to be the best, the Scanpan ($98). With a 3-outlet multi-tap ($8) you can be a minor hero at a crowded airport by letting a few others charge up *their* laptops or phones when the too-few AC outlets are full: I’ve never been turned down when asking politely to share the wall, nor turned down someone who wants to use one of the outlets. — Timothy Lord I carry one of these tiny flashlights ($32).
