Recommended Background This course is intended for people who have never programmed before. Better Than Free

At its most foundational level, it copies every action, every character, every thought we make while we ride upon it. In order to send a message from one corner of the internet to another, the protocols of communication demand that the whole message be copied along the way several times. IT companies make a lot of money selling equipment that facilitates this ceaseless copying. Every bit of data ever produced on any computer is copied somewhere. Our digital communication network has been engineered so that copies flow with as little friction as possible. This super-distribution system has become the foundation of our economy and wealth. Yet the previous round of wealth in this economy was built on selling precious copies, so the free flow of free copies tends to undermine the established order.

About the Course In this course we will seek to “understand Einstein,” especially focusing on the special theory of relativity that Albert Einstein, as a 26-year-old patent clerk, introduced in his so-called “miracle year” of 1905.

Understanding Einstein: The Special Theory of Relativity

Our goal will be to go behind the myth-making and beyond the popularized presentations of relativity in order to gain a deeper understanding of both Einstein the person and the concepts, predictions, and strange paradoxes of his theory. Some of the questions we will address include: How did Einstein come up with his ideas? What was the nature of his genius? What is the meaning of relativity? Students may choose one of three approaches to the course: a more quantitative approach, a more qualitative approach, or an auditing approach. Course Syllabus Week One (Einstein in Context): Einstein quotes of the week; a thought experiment involving relativity; physics and Einstein circa 1900. Excellence in Psychiatry and Psychology. Don't Be a MOOC Dropout: How to Survive and Thrive in a Massive Open Online Course

The New Media Consortium Horizon Report 2013 views MOOCs as the technology trend of the year. The MOOC concept is spreading rapidly from what was initially developed by George Siemens and Stephen Downes. Now institutions like Coursera, Udacity and edX have taken over the conversation, offering a wide variety of courses open to learners around the world. Meanwhile, leading universities like Stanford, as well the Open University (OU) in the U.K. are jumping on the bandwagon with their own MOOCs.

On the Road Summary. On the Road features Sal Paradise, a young writer fascinated by the questionable "hero" that is Dean Moriarty.

On the Road Summary

The novel involves, as you might expect, several road trips, sometimes with cars, and sometimes without. The first trip starts in New York (home base, effectively) and runs to Chicago (lots of jazz), then Denver (with Dean searching for his missing father, and hanging out with poet Carlo Marx), and to San Francisco to visit Remi Boncoeur. This trip, as all subsequent trips, features sex, drugs, alcohol, and music. Sal ends up working as a night watchman in San Francisco, only to discover that he isn’t cut out for law enforcement or for staying in one place longer than a month.

He takes off again. The Left Hand of Darkness. Let's perform a little thought experiment.

The Left Hand of Darkness

Imagine a planet in the middle of its ice age, snow blanketing everything, always seeing your breath puffed into the wind. Every aspect of life from traveling to housing to eating is dominated by just how frigid the world is. Drinks even come with little ice-picks so you can break up the ice that's constantly forming on top. Betterment.
