Second-time winner of TeachingEnglish blog award, Cristina Cabal, offers a few tried and tested error-correction activities. Does every single writing error need to be corrected? In the learning of a second language, this is a question that stirs up great controversy. While it is true that most spelling errors will disappear as learner proficiency increases, there are some persistent errors – mainly grammatical – which remain despite repeated efforts to correct them. In the following collection of error-correction activities for writing, the main aim is to get students to identify and correct writing errors taken from their own essays. The activities are fun and highly motivating, and because they are fast-paced, I would suggest going through the errors with the whole class a second time at the end to reinforce learning.

I tend to think that my students are like me; I need the right kind of atmosphere. Writing requires time, silence and lots of inspiration. Ideally, at this time of the year, I would probably wish to be sitting next to a fireplace with the most perfect instagrammable snow falling outside my window while drinking a nice cup of coffee waiting for inspiration to strike. Stare out the window. Consider going for a walk; have a nap instead. So far, 2012 has been ram-jammed with all sorts of excitement, and I guess I just need to catch my breath. The one thing the sloth queen did accomplish this weekend, was making pancakes. My lethargy led me to making walnut flour, instead of chopping the nuts by hand and leaving them chunky – turns out that was the best idea ever. LEMON PANCAKES WITH YOGURT + BERRIES. There was a time when I thought pancakes only came from Bisquick boxes. Pancake creativity maxed out at throwing in some chocolate chips or blueberries into the batter on a weekend morning, but my parents were no-fuss kind of cooks. I woke up really craving something this week and couldn’t figure out for hours what is was, so I decided that it must be pancakes, mainly because pancakes are amazing and I hadn’t had them in a while.

The problem was that I was away from home and so didn’t have all my ingredients with me, which meant that I had to make something really simple. I really didn’t think they were really going to work as I just threw anything we had into a food processor and whizzed it into a mix, but I was happy at the thought of enjoying a sort of pancake-esq mess so it didn’t matter, but I was so wrong – they were the best pancakes I’d ever made!

Sadly I hadn’t written down the recipe as I thought it wouldn’t be worth sharing so I then spent ages yesterday trying to recreate them and finally did, so I hope you love these as much as I do! They’re honestly so simple and require so few ingredients, it’s so awesome – all you need are oats, ripe bananas, nut butter, water and some mango. . - 2 cups of water. LEMON RICOTTA PANCAKES.
