Getting Development Work Done

Facebook Twitter

White Truffle. WhiteTruffle is a San Francisco based web start-up, the brain child of Frenchman Alex Deve, who describe the business as e-harmony for recruiters. I met Alex in San francisco, and again in London recently, where he brought me up to speed with the progress the business is making. I like the concept and thinking behind the site, and the way the product is evolving.

It is deliberately disruptive. More of an automated recruiter than a candidate database or job board. WhiteTruffle introduces engineers to companies, and companies to engineers, and they do it in a different way to a conventional job board or C.V. database, adding recruiter thinking to technology, using dynamic data intelligence to continually understand and match profiles. It’s not surprising that the site is designed to think like a recruiter, as Deve’s 2 business partners are executive headhunters in the technology sectors. Deve spent several months mapping what his co-founders did in their recruitment business. Bill.

FAQ about spec work | NO!SPEC. What is spec work? Basically, spec work is any kind of creative work rendered and submitted, either partial or completed, by designers to prospective clients before taking steps to secure both their work and equitable fees. Under these conditions, designers will often be asked to submit work under the guise of either a contest or an entry exam on actual, existing jobs as a “test” of their skill. In addition, the designers normally unwittingly lose all rights to their creative work because they failed to protect themselves by means of a contract or agreement. The clients often use this freely-gained work as they see fit without fear of legal repercussion. Why is spec work unethical? The designers in essence work free of charge and with an often falsely advertised, overinflated promise for future employment; or are given other insufficient forms of compensation.

The reality is that they often yield little extra work, profit or referrals. Is my contest spec work? What’s wrong with a contest? UK Tech Startup Job Fair Silicon Milkroundabout. Simplon.co. In late 2009, I created an online persona named Pete London – a self-described JavaScript ninja – to help attract and hire the best JavaScript recruiters. While I never hired a recruiter from the experiment, I learned a ton about how to compete in today’s Silicon Valley talent war. Based upon two years of non-scientific research, here’s what you should know… The Recruiting Crisis In late 2009, my desk was piled with JavaScript resumes. However, in 2010, that had to change. I had very little more to give. But then my recruiting problem went from serious to heart-stopping dire. I needed amazing recruiters desperately.

The honeypot idea emerged slowly, “If only I weren’t a founder! My hopes sank pretty quickly. Bam. Made famous in the back pages of Vanity Fair Magazine, it was named not for questions, but for the answers given by Marcel Proust to a set of questions asked by his friend Antoinette Faure.

I remember them best from a television show called “Inside the Actors Studio” where, at the end of every episode, host James Lipton would ask these questions of the famous actors he interviewed. His questions included: What is your favorite sound? What is your favorite curse word? If you weren’t an actor, what would you be instead?

Barbara Walters used a variation of the Proust Questionnaire in her interview with the Obamas a couple of weeks ago - which, in turn, inspired us at Artisan. I asked our Recruiters what Proust-like questions they would like to ask (or do ask) when they interview talent, and I love the responses! And so I bring you…(drum roll, please)...The Proust Questionnaire for Creatives Wendy Stackhouse, Consultant for Artisan Creative. Of the 530 emails directed to Pete London, there were a few standouts.

Thirty-seven emails contained personalization, role, and company information but within that group, just 5 recruiters went beyond an occasional detail and spent a minimum of three paragraphs explaining the team’s priorities, charting the company’s trajectory, and describing why Pete’s background set the perfect stage for a new opportunity. The best recruiters According to these metrics, the extraordinary recruiting folks who represent that top 1% are: what’s their secret?

I’ve re-read Pete’s emails multiple times and analyzed the best recruiters’ tips and tricks. Here’s my attempt to articulate the unspoken rules of a fantastic recruiter email: Tip #1. The most common mistake a recruiter makes is framing the opportunity from their perspective instead of the candidate’s: “Hi, I’m a recruiter, I’ve got a great position for you. Tip #2. None of these greetings is ideal. And finally, the apology. Tip #3. Summary. Programming Test | Hire programmers | Interviewstreet | Dashboard. 7 Resume Builder Startups That Want To Get You Hired. Read them on ils.sont.la Coding Goûter – “Goûter” being the french for a children afternoon snack – is a monthly event where children and their parents put their hands on various programming tools, algorithmic games and puzzles, development environments, languages. And as it’s an afternoon snack, we eat cakes and candies throughout the afternoon! The first Coding Goûter in Paris took place early December 2011 at the invitation of Jonathan Perret. He hosted the session at the software development company where he is an associate, a company specializing in agile programming.

A good fit :-) Since then, three Coding Goûters took place, with increasing success and attention from parents and even media. Why Coding Goûter? We want to give our children the possibility and the aspiration to be creative with and empowered by new technologies. Many of us learned to code as kids, or teenagers, or later, but in all cases we enjoyed it. Strikingly. 35+ Best Wireframing Tools and Templates. With wireframing tools and templates you can work efficiently and flexible with website designs in the early phases where features and requirements are still being developed. As you know, a good start is often half done. In web design, it is tempting to start out pixel perfect design as early as possible and ship the PSD for being sliced and converted into HTML. However, best practice is to keep the level of detail in the design to an absolute minimum until you are clear on all the features and page elements.

Once a design is drawn in Photoshop, it takes a lot of effort to make large turnarounds. The best and most common way to work flexible with the web design in the early phases is to draw simple wireframe sketches. If you are a bit more old school and feel the creative energy flow best when using a pen, I recommend that you check out some printable wire frame templates.
