Thus far we’ve wrapped and bundled and knotted and hammered, so let’s change course for a hot second and go for something pretty much anyone can do and that all the skirt-wearing among you are able to use: the $10, 30-minute skirt tutorial, for beginners. ($5 if you already have thread and elastic! A little more than 30 minutes if you don’t have a sewing machine, though.) Blind hems, basting, cartridge pleats, interfacing, stitched chains, setting waistbands and sleeves, boning…all that’ll come later. This is super-basic, you-don’t-even-need-a-sewing-machine wardrobe improvement. The kind of project where you answer “How did you do that?!” You’ll need: - A needle or a sewing machine - A couple feet of elastic, not more than one inch wide (I prefer 1/2-inch) - Half a yard (or so) of a medium-weight fabric. Clothing fabrics generally come in two widths at most stores: 45” and 60”.

This will be your hem. Next, turn your fabric over, so that it’s right-side up. OMG. 10 Resources For Students Online - Ryan Clark. ABC's of Indie Rock | jggeorge | 8tracks. * Infographic: The True Cost of Homeownership. Everyone is talking about how now is a great time to buy a home. And, on the surface, it looks like the perfect time. Home prices are low, and mortgage interest rates remain at near-record lows. There is some argument, though, that it might be better to buy a home in six months; without the home buyer tax credit to help keep home prices higher, some argue that another dip in prices is likely. However, whether you are really ready to buy a home has little to do with what is happening in the housing market; more important is what is happening in your personal finance world. When many people start thinking about purchasing a home, they usually get excited about figuring out how big a house they can get, and use online mortgage calculators to help them estimate monthly payments at a specific interest. What many of these calculators don’t include, though, are additional costs. The following infographic from CreditLoan.com offers a sobering look at how much it can cost to own a home.

How to Learn (But Not Master) Any Language in 1 Hour (Plus: A Favor) Deconstructing Arabic in 45 Minutes Conversational Russian in 60 minutes? This post is by request. How long does it take to learn Chinese or Japanese vs. Spanish or Irish Gaelic? I would argue less than an hour. Here’s the reasoning… Before you invest (or waste) hundreds and thousands of hours on a language, you should deconstruct it. So far, I’ve deconstructed Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Norwegian, Irish Gaelic, Korean, and perhaps a dozen others.

How is it possible to become conversationally fluent in one of these languages in 2-12 months? Consider a new language like a new sport. There are certain physical prerequisites (height is an advantage in basketball), rules (a runner must touch the bases in baseball), and so on that determine if you can become proficient at all, and—if so—how long it will take. Languages are no different. Six Lines of Gold Here are a few questions that I apply from the outset. 1. 2. 3. 4. The apple is red. The 15 Most Influential Books I Read in 2009 | Invisible Inkling. An Intro to Passive Income, Popular Ways of Getting It and the Mindset You Need to Start Creating It. EmailEmail Most of us have a job where hard work is expected and necessary. We offer our knowledge and/or labor to the company we work for in order to get recognition, satisfaction and compensation in return. Although this is the way most people make money, the minute we stop working, the income stops.

On the other hand, a popular idea that’s been floating around the internet is passive income. The idea of it is that money is being earned with or without our involvement. Once it’s set up, the recurring income will come continuously. Anyone can quickly see why this idea is popular. Provides Freedom If your passive income is higher than your living expenses, then you free yourself from the daily grind of working for someone at least 8 hours a day. Offers Diversification To borrow a popular term from investing, passive income provides diversification. Continuous Passive income doesn’t stop coming when you stop working. Free online video is creating new global communities—giving their members both the means and the motivation to step up their skills and broaden their imaginations. Photos: Ted.com At last year’s Academy Awards, in front of a global audience of millions, a new troupe, the Legion of Extraordinary Dancers, or LXD, performed a jaw-dropping number. It was, many thought, the best part of the whole spectacle.

The dancers were electric, exciting, and altogether unprecedented: Their routine of tricks and moves was hitherto unknown to dance. Video is the killer app. Don’t write me. Several of the dancers were self-taught. Chu formed the LXD based on a simple revelation: Because of the web, specifically online video, dance was evolving in Internet time. In fact, he wasn’t as good as a professional—he was better. Chu’s words ignited flashbulbs in my brain. Indeed, the quality of talks across the board (as measured by audience rankings) was rising. (Have Fun Storming the Castle) | Epicenter  Google Voice users are now free to turn their current cellphone number into their main Google Voice number, the company announced Tuesday, bringing the much-requested feature to all users after a short, but very public, testing period. For many porting will bring joy.

For others, expect hours of pain — on hold with your mobile carrier. Porting, which costs $20, allows users to turn their mobile number into a Google Voice number, obviating the need to try to spread a new number to your contacts. For those not clear on how Google Voice works, the company issues you a new phone number — your Google Voice number. It becomes your master number and when someone calls it, it rings some or all of your other phones and your Gmail/Google Talk account. This can include your mobile phone, your home phone, your work phone and your computer, if you have Gmail open.

Google Voice also transcribes your voicemail and sends your the transcript to your e-mail address. Anthropomimetic Machines No matter how closely a robot resembles a human on the outside, if you crack it open, the jumble of wires is unlikely to bear much resemblance to our insides. A group of European researchers aims to bridge that gap--its robot prototype is anthropomimetic, meaning it mimics the human form. There's a skeleton made of thermoplastic polymer, actuators that correspond to each muscle and kiteline as tendons.

The goal is to create a more human-like robot that interacts with and responds to environments the way we do. 2. I Make Projects - Giving Yourself a Sixth Sense for Wireless Networks. Giving Yourself a Sixth Sense for Wireless Networks What This Is This project is for a small electronic unit that allows the user to sense the presence and relative signal strength of wireless hotspots.

It can be worn as a pendant or carried in a pocket. It is "always on" and communicates the presence and signal strength of an in-range hotspot by way of sequences of pulses - like a heartbeat you can feel. The stronger and faster the "heartbeat", the stronger the wireless signal detected. It does not actually authenticate or otherwise interact with a hotspot in any way. How It Was Made This project consists of a microcontroller, some custom interface electronics, a small vibe motor, and an off-the-shelf Wi-Fi detector - the one I used is by D-Link and is keychain-sized.

Here is the sensor I used, and some pictures of the construction. How It Works The microcontroller periodically "presses" the button on the detector to initiate a reading. How To Make Your Own Operation Activate the sensor. I Make Projects. How to Build Custom Speakers. With the sides, top and bottom of the cabinets drying, it's a good time to start work on the front and back panels. First time builders may choose to simplify this step and simply cut a large circle opening for the speaker driver to mount in.

In that case, the speaker drivers' frame will rest on the surface of the speaker, protruding an 1/8" or so. For a truly professional look, however, you'll want to recess the drivers so that they mount flush with the front face. In either case, the first step is to cut out a circle that accommodates your driver. I use a plunge router fitted with a Jasper Circle Jig. This Jasper Jig allows be to cut a circle of just about any size up between 2" and 18". If you are using a router, use a 1/8" or 1/4" straight bit to cut out the circle so you end up removing as little material as possible. Once the circles are cut, it's time to tackle the optional recess. To do this you need to create a pattern template.

"A growing economy consists of prices falling, not rising. " The stock market does not work the way most people think. A commonly held belief — on Main Street as well as on Wall Street — is that a stock-market boom is the reflection of a progressing economy: as the economy improves, companies make more money, and their stock value rises in accordance with the increase in their intrinsic value.

A major assumption underlying this belief is that consumer confidence and consequent consumer spending are drivers of economic growth. A stock-market bust, on the other hand, is held to result from a drop in consumer and business confidence and spending — due to inflation, rising oil prices, high interest rates, etc., or for no reason at all — that leads to declining business profits and rising unemployment. The Fundamental Source of All Rising Prices For perspective, let's put stock prices aside for a moment and make sure first to understand how aggregate consumer prices rise. Forced Investing. Ask a Physicist: How long does it take for you to fall into a black hole? @Pants McCracky: What our friendly physicist didn't explain is that the difference is perceptual. Time doesn't "slow down" as you approach the event horizon because time isn't a universal thing. Okay, so imagine you're carrying a big clock as you approach the event horizon, and I'm carrying a synchronized clock with me.

I can see my clock right next to me, and I can watch yours with a telescope. As you fall closer to the event horizon, it will look like your clock is running slower than mine. I will see you move closer and closer to the horizon, slower and slower, and I will never see you cross, because your image takes longer and longer to get to me. But from your perspective it's totally different. 29 Semi-Productive Things I Do Online When I’m Trying to Avoid Real Work. You don’t always have to work hard to be productive.
