Tout d’abord constituées à partir des « collections historiques » de l’ancien musée national d’art moderne, elle a été enrichie grâce à une commission d’acquisition qui a rendu possibles des achats patrimoniaux et des acquisitions contemporaines, à une époque où les œuvres historiques étaient accessibles.
