Kno Expands Beyond College, Partners With Houghton Mifflin To Bring Digital Textbooks To K-12. Founded in 2009, Kno began its career with ambitious plans to disrupt education with a little mobile hardware — by developing a tablet that was tailor-made for students.
Unfortunately, thanks to the meteoric rise of the iPad and, later, Apple’s big re-entry into the textbook arena with iBooks 2, Kno’s hardware efforts didn’t pan out. Beginning early last year, the startup pivoted towards a more agnostic solution, creating an educational software platform and app to bring interactive textbooks to the college crowd. Of course, with nearly $80 million raised from investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Mike Maples and Ron Conway, there’s more pressure on Kno to generate growth (and revenue) than there is on your average edtech startup.
Today, the Santa Clara-based company took a big step in that direction, expanding its scope beyond the college campus to introduce digital textbooks into K-12 classrooms. As to distance traveled since 2009? As to what’s next? More on Kno at home here. Available on iPad, Android, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Web. Seelio.
No More Boring Resumes: Seelio Lets College Students Showcase Their Work & Helps Employers Find Them. Looking to rethink the resume, a startup called Seelio is opening its doors today to anyone with a .edu email address.
The company, which spun out of an existing service called TruApp, wants to offer college students a better way to showcase their work via online portfolios which employers and recruiters alike can browse through and search by keyword. Upon finding a potential candidate, employers can then use Seelio to communicate directly with the student in question.

Sorry, teachers, it’s not for you. Yet. A number of startups have emerged in the last year looking to dethrone the old guards of higher education technology, like Blackboard. Yet, while many educational platforms are limited in what they offer students, focusing instead on building tools for educators and teachers, one startup is taking an alternative (or, in its own words, “populist”) approach. The startup believes that it can do just as much to benefit the learning process and boost student retention and performance by focusing its efforts on providing them with an educational platform that offers live, interactive studying and sharing. Clever Gets $10 Million From Sequoia To Provide A Standardized API For School Data. Clever launched about a year and a half ago to provide a standardized API for K-12 schools that allows them to unlock and share data with outside developers.
It’s managed to get 10,000 schools signed up to use its tools since then. Now, according to our sources, the company has raised $10 million in funding led by Sequoia Capital. The funding comes as Clever is finding ways to make schools more connected and accessible for developers. Most schools today use a variety of legacy Student Information Systems (SIS) as a way to store student data. But many of those systems tend to be outdated or custom-built, meaning that the information held within — which includes class lists, attendance, and grades — can’t be shared or accessed by outside developers. 5-Minute SIS Integration for Educational Applications.
