US slumps in press freedom rankings. Positive Images. The Positive Images toolkit is an educational resource for teachers, youth workers and other educators to teach young people about migration and development.

The toolkit includes ten innovative educational activities for young people aged 12 and over. They use the Bechdel Test – what initially began as a bit of a joke now really highlights the lack of a significant female presence in films. Basically it says that if a movie passes the test it must fulfill the following conditions: The movie must contain at least 2 women.They must have namesThey must talk about something else other than a man. The question I have is: if you start placing emphasis on this rule in movies, will you end up getting scenes where women speak to each other just for the sake of it? Will we end up with really contrived, politically correct movies? It’s an interesting concern about the representation of women in today’s media.

The Government has published guidance for employers on how to deal with the Equality Act’s positive action provisions, and has urged employers to ignore scare stories about the Act’s implications for business.

Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone advised employers to look at the guidance before the law changes on 6 April, and emphasised the Act’s benefits. She said: “Despite what you might have read in some quarters, positive action is absolutely not about political correctness, or red tape, or quotas. It’s about giving individual employers an extra tool they can use to help make the workplace fairer. “Positive action has the potential to make a real difference in the workplace, but only if employers understand what they can do and how they can do it.

That’s why we’ve produced straightforward guidance that explains exactly what positive action is all about,” she added. HR teams struggling to keep up with equality legislation. Despite the majority of employers providing diversity training for some members of their HR team, four out of 10 employers are not confident that their HR teams are kept sufficiently up-to-date on equality legislation to perform their jobs.

This is according to XpertHR’s 2011 diversity training survey, which also found that some organisations blame funding issues and a lack of support from senior management for inadequate training on diversity issues. Organisations were keen to keep HR up-to-date on changes brought about by the Equality Act 2010, with seven in 10 organisations having already provided training for HR and 21% planning to do so by autumn 2011. Charlotte Wolff, XpertHR training editor and author of the report, said: “Given the prominence of legislation in this area and the breadth of its coverage, ensuring HR has the right levels of expertise in equality law is vital.
