How to Edit Your Own Writing

Be careful with infusing your writing with authority — do that when you have the evidence to back up your position and make that evidence available. If you don't (or don't make that evidence available), writing with such authority can backfire; you'll come off as someone who is too sure of yourself without bothering to check the facts. The other side of this is if you are offering an opinion for which there isn't enough evidence to back it up with authority, using a subjunctive mood lets the reader know the topic isn't determined. If you use an authoritative tone when the issue is not certain, you risk losing your reader's trust if the reader bothers to check the facts on that issue. 12/17/12 10:37am
