How to Keep a Slave in Ancient Rome, 170 BC

http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/slaveryrome.htm How to Keep a Slave in Ancient Rome, 170 BC T he institution of slavery provided a critical pillar that supported the existence of both the republican and empire phases of ancient Roman society. The size of this slave population is estimated in the millions, and comprised between twenty-five and thirty percent of the total Roman population. The majority of these men, women and children worked on the farm - tilling the soil and reaping the harvest.

This large volume of over 600 pages was for many years the standard reference work, in the English-speaking world at least, on the city of Rome, its hills, its streets, its walls and monuments. Since 1929, research has progressed immensely, hundreds of scholars having opened new excavations in Rome, or analyzed old ones, as well as inscriptions, coins and literary evidence.

Ave Amici!
The Lays of Ancient Rome was once part of high school education; indeed I read the Horatius in 6th Grade in Capleville, Tennessee. Now of course we were a poor school district, and couldn't afford expensive textbooks, so our readers tended to be filled with public domain materials. Still, I am not at all sure that was inferior to the expensive books filled with squish now written for our students.

The Lays of Ancient Rome

The Roman Empire: in the First Century. The Roman Empire

Two thousand years ago, the world was ruled by Rome. From England to Africa and from Syria to Spain, one in every four people on earth lived and died under Roman law. The Roman Empire in the first century AD mixed sophistication with brutality and could suddenly lurch from civilization, strength and power to terror, tyranny and greed. Leader of the pack
Roman might was made legendary by the valor of her glorious Legions.
