Understanding phobias. Fear is a form of anxiety triggered by a situation or an object.

Understanding phobias

We know what it’s like to be afraid in certain situations and change our behaviour accordingly – avoiding dark alleys and standing back from the edge of a cliff. These are understandable responses to situations where we might be harmed. When there is a real threat, for example if you are about to be attacked, fear is a sensible and realistic response, and your body will release adrenaline and prepare for ‘fight or flight’. Psychotherapists: Mechanics, Surgeons, or Rehab Workers?

It reminds me of an old boyfriend of mine who used to give nicknames to the women he was dating. My nickname was “crazy mechanic girl.” In his tongue and cheek way, he coined the nickname because he thought that, as a psychotherapist, I fix crazy people. This idea is a misconception at so many levels! First of all, going to therapy doesn’t make you crazy and, second of all, therapists don’t fix their patients. The mechanic model doesn’t quite capture real psychotherapists, though. What is a Character Disorder? Personality and character disorders are not the same thing.

What is a Character Disorder?

Our personality defines the stylistic way we tend to interact, while our character is defined by the level of social conscientiousness and virtue in our personality. When personality or character traits present major obstacles to functioning in a healthy way, they might constitute a disorder. First of all, having a disturbance (alt. “disorder”) of character is not the same as having a personality disorder, although many (including mental health professionals) erroneously use the terms synonymously. Gay Or Straight? Body Language Reveals Sexual Orientation « intellectual vanities… about close to everything. Gay Or Straight? Body Language Reveals Sexual Orientation « intellectual vanities… about close to everything

Good data, biased interpretation. As probably the researchers have been straight, they missed the term “gay-dar” used for this sensing ability within the community. As such, this study shows much less about allegedly treacherous body language but about perception stereotypes: “gender-atypical combinations were perceived generally to be homosexual”, as the authors put it.
