A World to Win | Fight the cuts - build People's Assemblies

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_controversies Controversies over video games often center on topics such as video game graphic violence , sex and sexism, violent and gory scenes, partial or full nudity, portrayal of criminal behavior , racism, and other provocative and objectionable material. Video games have been studied for links to addiction and aggression . Earlier meta-analyses (an analysis of several studies) were conflicting. A 2001 study found that exposure to violent video games causes at least a temporary increase in aggression and that this exposure correlates with aggression in the real world.

Douglas Rushkoff - Life Inc

This didn't just happen. In Life Inc., award-winning writer, documentary filmmaker, and scholar Douglas Rushkoff traces how corporations went from a convenient legal fiction to the dominant fact of contemporary life. Indeed as Rushkoff shows, most Americans have so willingly adopted the values of corporations that they're no longer even aware of it. This fascinating journey reveals the roots of our debacle, from the late Middle Ages to today.

14 Wild Ideas

by Robin Hanson , Oct. 18, 2001 A wild idea is one that many people think is obviously quite unlikely. I'd say at least a third of these wild ideas are likely true. (Parenthetic links are to more of my writings .) http://hanson.gmu.edu/wildideas.html

My Strange Mind - Independent perspective on government, economics, alternative historical views, wellness and philosophy

Since the beginning of the month of March, I’ve been working on an in-depth cleanse. This cleanse started with a detox diet for the first two weeks, consisting of loads of organic vegetables as soups and stir fries as well as nuts, fruit and dried fruit. This was followed by a week of juice fasting, [...] Ever step back and think, “what is this mysterious yet seemingly all-pervading force in our lives we call government?” http://blog.mystrangemind.com/

Luscious / Fernanda Viegas & Martin Wattenberg

luscious pays homage to fashion designers and photographers, those who compose rousing images of light and color that fill the pages of glossy magazines. The piece is our attempt to distill their visions into abstract compositions. To create the images in luscious , we began with a series of magazine advertisements for luxury brands. We then used a custom algorithm designed to extract “peak” colors from any picture (much like our Wired anniversary piece). http://hint.fm/projects/luscious/

The Epidemic of Obesity, Diabetes and "Metabolic Syndrome:" Cell Energy Adaptations in a Toxic World? "Metabolic syndrome" (MetSyn) has been termed the "Epidemic of the 21 st century." MetSyn is an accretion of symptoms, including high body mass index (weight-for-height), high blood sugar, high blood pressure (BP), high blood triglycerides, high waist circumference (central/visceral fat deposition), and/or reduced HDL-cholesterol, the so-called "good" cholesterol. Epidemics of Obesity and diabetes are intertwined with, and accompany, the meteoric rise in MetSyn. The prevalent view is that MetSyn is due to a glut of food calories ("energy") consumed, and a dearth of exercise energy expended, spurring weight gain—an "energy surfeit"—with the other features arising in consequence. After all, we have more access to calories, and are more often sedentary, than in times gone by.

1. Integrating social and gender analysis into natural resource management research: International Development Research Centre

In most regions of the world, the sustainable management of natural resources, including biodiversity, requires the involvement of multiple social actors or stakeholders. Stakeholder involvement refers to the active and meaningful participation of small farmers (both men and women), large farmers, entrepreneurs, local authorities, local groups, non-governmental organization ( NGO ) staff and policy makers in decision-making processes concerning the use, management and conservation of natural resources. This includes the analysis of problems and opportunities, the definition of research and development initiatives, and the monitoring and assessment of action and plans. It often also includes working together to reconcile conflicting or divergent points of view and interests.
